Al Jazeera is showing a video that purports to be evidence of extra-judicial killings in the aftermath of the Nigerian suppression of the Boko Haram group last summer (BE WARNED: THIS IS EXTREMELY GRAPHIC SHOWING PEOPLE'S ALLEGED EXECUTIONS). Al Jazeera claims that the Nigerian government has in fact admitted the fact that at least some killings of prisoners after fighting had ended took place. However this is denied in a Washington Post article according to which Nigerian officials have claimed the video is a fabrication created by Boko Haram supporters.

Al Jazeera further claimed on their TV news broadcast that it appeared that after the fighting some men were randomly taken and executed along a street outside a police station. The city name was not given. One of the men executed was a Muslim community leader who had apparently worked to stop violence between the government and Boko Haram.

Boko Haram is an Islamic Nigerian group that is alleged to have been one of the causes of religious violence in northern Nigeria over the past several years.

From the Al Jazeera article linked to in the previous posting:
Quote:
The family of Baba Fugu Mohammed, a respected community leader, told Al Jazeera that he was among those put to death outside the police station.

"He was killed, he was killed, that's what we believe. He was shot by the police," one relative said.

Fugu Mohammed was the father-in-law of Mohammed Yusuf, the Boko Haram leader whose group had battled the police, but the two had become estranged.

His family said that he had come to help police restore order, but was shot.

Just a musing on 'judicial killing' ..

It seems that whenever a Govt. takes to killing in the name of justice that it follows on that those seeking to accelerate the process of justice take to killing themselves?

The experience of the US would suggest otherwise. Continued capital punishment does not result in people taking justice into their own hands.

In part of the video shown there is a section where a someone shouts from a crowd of people urging "no mercy". It seems to be the product in part of revenge common just after war.
