Question on full awakening within seven births

Postby Sarva » Thu Mar 22, 2012 1:17 pm

I have seen the concept of full awakening within seven births from different sources, what I am not sure is if this can imply that awakening could happen in one birth, or if there is some implication that multiple births are a must?

Please could someone help me to confirm the right view of this?

e.g.
“He/she is guaranteed to achieve full awakening within seven lifetimes at most, and in the interim will not be reborn in any of the lower realms.”
- Source Link: http://www.accesstoinsight.org/lib/stud ... tream.html

“A stream-enterer reaches arahantship within seven rebirths upon opening the eye of the Dharma.”
- Source Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_stage ... ightenment

The time from first hearing the Dhamma to nibbana can be less than one lifetime; any arahant in the Buddha's day was like this.

Hi Sarva,

The "seven rebirths" of the stream-winner are only found in a few places
in the five Nikaya's. One such sutta is AN 3.86 - Sekhin Sutta - here is
a link to the ATI version:

http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka ... .than.html

"With the wasting away of [the first] three fetters, he is one who has seven more times at most. Having transmigrated and wandered on among devas and human beings, he will put an end to stress."

Regards, Vincent.

Thanks a lot, Daverupa, Ñāṇa and Vinasp
That answers that :) For some reason I have some niggling doubts I am working to rid myself of.

I now recall where my doubt arose, it came from a presumpiton based on the following from Wikipedia on Nichiren: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nichiren

"1- Revealing the “Direct Path to Enlightenment”: The path to enlightenment in pre-Lotus Sutra teachings extends gradually throughout many Bodhisattva stages requiring many lifetimes before reaching Buddhahood."

I mention this just for interest as I am sastified with the answers above.
