Nimitta is the mental object that leads one into Dhyana it is mentioned in MN 128.
Essentially most people will experience a "bright light" before entering Dhyana,
This bright light is a Nimitta, some call it seeing through the minds eye since the "light" you are seeing has nothing to do with actual eyesight.
When the Nimitta arises make that your object of concentration, this will lead you in Dhyana during the 2nd Dhyana the obsorbtion is so strong even the focus on the mental object ceases.... The doer is gone and only the watcher/knower remains.
All Dhayana is done to lead one to the 3 knowledges(visions)
