Purification

Postby Nibbida » Wed Aug 03, 2011 3:40 pm

Is there any mention of purification in the suttas? "Visuddhi" appears to be the Pali word for purification (i.e. Visuddhimagga). But I'm curious to find early sources talking about purification and how it happens.

As I understand it, when we view experience with mindfulness, equanimity, compassion, etc. we are undoing sankharas, leading to purification (and eventually to awakening). I think I read this in Hart/Goenkaji's Art of Living.

Thank you.

To study is to know the texts,
To practice is to know your defilements,
To attain the goal is to know and let go.
