CUNDA BODHISATTVA

Dear friends,

I am new to this forum and I have joined, because I have some very specific queries about Buddhism in general and Tibetan Vajrayana in specific. I would be most grateful for any kind of help from your side.

I am particulary interested in the (Tantric) practices centered around Cunda Bodhisattva. Cunda Bodhisattva is known as Zhunti Pusa in Chinese and her worship was quite popular in China. She is also the subject of Chapter 14 in Miranda Shaw's "Buddhist Godesses of India". Prefacing the mentioned chapter itself is a quote from a Drikung meditation manual highly praising the female boddhisatva (ref.: http://books.google.si/books?id=MvDKOK1 ... &q&f=false). I believe that the proper reference for the manual is "Chos-dbang blo-'gros, sGrub thabs nor bu'i phreng ba'i lo rgyus" (the quote at the beginning of the chapter is from fol. 15a.4-16a.2).

Now, I would be interested to know if there is still a living tradition of the Tantric practices in respect to Cunda Boddhisattva in Tibetan Buddhism? If so, how would they compare to the Chinese practices of the Zhenyan stream?

Are there nowadays Tibetan adepts still alive who would have the proper lineages transmitted and siddhi in the Cunda sadhana(s) itself?

Nyingma master Ju Mipham wrote a short practice text for this diety. I have heard that Jonangpa practice this diety too.
I am pretty sure that there are initiation rituals exist, not sure if it's in drubta kundu cycle.

can't properly compare chinese and tibetan ones since i haven't read them all.

Not very sure what you meant for 'proper lineage'.... if you want to chant the mantra, do the offering as said in texts, any master who has Kangyur/Tengyur lineage can give you the LUNG. I don't think Chinese vajrayana practitioners focus on LUNG that much. To be honest with you, I believe many cundi practitioners in Chinese area nowadays directly practice from book without getting any transmission (like what i used to do in taiwan). To find a Chinese master with unbroken lineage of cundi practice probably won't be much easier.

The Chinese Zhenyan (i.e. Mantrayana) is definitely not as well preserved as the Tibetan tradition or the Japanese Shingon. In this respect I fully agree with you. This is also the reason why I was asking about the situtation in Tibetan Vajrayana.

depends what you need really.

if you want to acheive buddhahood in this very life, lineage is important, lama is important, maybe a diety suit you is very important.
But, there are many many people in China or Japan practice Cundi or simply chant her mantra, got lots of benefits.

I think Nan-Huai Chin has the Cundi practice, probably he could initiate you, if you can get to meet him...he lives in Suzhou, China.

1. If possible learn the complete mantra - at least the second line

namaḥ saptānāṁ samyak-saṁbuddha koṭīnāṁ
tad-yathā oṁ cale cule cundi svāhā

2. Chant along with the video, focusing on the images of Cundi

3. Towards the end of the video the images will stop
at this point you can absorb the goddess nature into your essence

4. When the mantra stops you can continue the chanting/absorption internally

5. Click your fingers when the YinYana symbol appears to return to normal consciousness
