Headgear/Hats worn in Tibetan Buddhism

Postby plwk » Sat Apr 09, 2011 7:03 pm

Ok this thread is about the various hats worn by those in Tibetan Buddhism...
Can anyone explain what these respective hats mean from size, shape and color?

Most of the Nyingma ones are just variations
of the Padma hat. THe visor one is associated
with Dzogchen sky gazing practice.

Oh, and the pandita hats (pointy ones) worn by khenpos,
if they are red-- worn by nyingma and kagyu scholas-- there
are stipes. The number of stripes indicate the areas of expertise--
1, 2 or 3 stripes scholar of Sutra, tantra and dzogchen.

Yeah I noticed the stripes too like in the pic of the late Kyabje Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche. Thanks.
