Thoughts about criticism

Postby Annapurna » Fri Nov 06, 2009 9:15 am

I often notice that people who dish out a lot of criticism (of others) are proportionally unable to accept any criticism (of their own person).

This is astonishing, when you think of karma.

Inevitably, if you criticize others, openly, repeatedly, passionately, -in other words, if you expose others, without caring about their reactions, is it not to be expected, that eventually you get some karmic repercussion?

It seems odd to me to weigh with different scales.

"I may criticise, but others may not criticize me."

I can't wrap my mind around this. What's behind this?

Any thoughts?

fearing not to become my own enemy in the instant that I preach.."

Maybe it's self view

"Look at me way up here aren't I marvellous."

:anjali:
"For a disciple who has conviction in the Teacher's message & lives to penetrate it, what accords with the Dhamma is this:
'The Blessed One is the Teacher, I am a disciple. He is the one who knows, not I." -

“No lists of things to be done. The day providential to itself. The hour. There is no later. This is later. All things of grace and beauty such that one holds them to one's heart have a common provenance in pain. Their birth in grief and ashes.”
- Cormac McCarthy, The Road

Learn this from the waters:
in mountain clefts and chasms,
loud gush the streamlets,
but great rivers flow silently.

When is it acceptable to criticize another person though? Never? I think it would be hard to function in the world without ever being truthfully, constructively, critical of any being.

Not just hard Adam but very unhealthy. Remembering the "truthful and constructive " bit of course.

The Buddha was known to be very critical of some peoples behaviour. He even said that their behaviour was the behaviour of " fools ".
The going for refuge is the door of entrance to the teachings of the Buddha.

This is not a thread to critisize, but to understand, from a Buddhist angle.

Is that ok ?
