Tibetan Astrology

Post by Mikeliegler »

Can someone enlighten me about Tibetan Astrology. Does each school have it's own version? I'm wanting to follow Bon so I would be more interested in what they use more than the other. Are there any good books, Websites or Discussion Forums for Tibetan Astrology?

No, Tibetan Astrology is the same for all schools. There is not a Bon astrology, a Gelug astrology, etc. The Karma Kagyu does have its own calendar and because of that, its ephemeris of planetary positions differs slightly from the other schools, but the methods of prediction are the same. I haven't read it, but Michael Erlewhine has written a book on Tibetan Astrology, and as he is a serious astrologer, I am sure it is good. The other book I have seen is the older book by Philip Cornu, which seemed good, but not deep.

Thanks I ordered the book. So much to learn for me. I'm a newbie to all this and want to learn from those that know. Not from all that new age stuff that claims to be the real deal.

Many Thanks

hi, i have found Philippe Cornu's Tibetan Astrology very helpful.

but if you just want to learn to use tibetan astrology in a practical way, in daily life, then i would suggest Key for Consulting the Tibetan Calendar by Chogyal Namkhai Norbu.

the calendars offered here http://www.kalacakra.org/calendar/tiblist.htm are of great help if you would like to, at some point, make your own calculations.

Just an FYI, if you go to Michael Erlewhine's website, http://www.startypes.com/, and click on the e-books section, you can download the pdf version of the book for free.

Now you tell me it's free. :tantrum: Oh well, win some lose some. I would rather have it on PDF format anyhow. Michael Erlewhine has a more to download as well on his site. Worth checking out for anyone interested in this as well. Thank you very much for sharing that.

There are many, many pitfalls in astrology. Don't think astrologers know what they're talking about just because they've done it for a long time or because they've published hundreds of books. Anyone can publish a book.
Don't mean to bring you down, but Tibetan astrology / all forms of astrology, are full of errors, as you will find on Edward Hennings site, listed earlier: www.kalacakra.org

I would recommend getting Hennings own book on the Kalacakra.
http://www.amazon.com/Kalacakra-Calenda ... 0975373498
It's a bit expensive, and it would help to have some background.

Excellent starting point for Vedic astrology:
http://www.amazon.com/Essentials-Vedic- ... 1902405064

Thorough:
http://www.amazon.com/Light-Life-Introd ... 0940985691

Nakshatras:
http://www.amazon.com/Fundamentals-Vedi ... 0940985527

Wherever anyone says, use Tropical, even for Nakshatras.

You will need some nifty software:
https://sites.google.com/site/pymorinus/

Also:
Sun Signs - Linda Goodman
Cambridge University Practical Astronomy with your Calculator or Spreadsheet 4th Edition 2011
Calendrical Calculations

When people don't understand cause and effect, then astrology becomes mere divination, like numerology, tea leaves, yarrow sticks, mo dice etc. Not that divination is ineffectual, but its for the gifted.

Thank you. Very good advice and sources for deeper study. I'll be busy for awhile now. :woohoo:
