That was just a "caution statement" which may be helpful to keep in mind. The commentaries are not the commented.

In the tibetan tradition there often occurs that first there is a commentary, then this commentary is commented on, and then that commentary and then ...
As if they wanted to display the proliferation of thought for the records.

I am sure this is the case with all axial texts. There are more than 50 extant English translations of the Dhammpada, for example, and then there are source texts in several languages, translations in heaven knows how many other languages, collections of stories on each of the verses, and library stacks of commentaries from centuries past till the present. My method of study is to gather as much of this background material as possible, select what seems to be the best of it, go at it for a while -- and all the while reading the text -- and keep it up, until as you say, exhaustion sets in.

One should refrain from biased judgments and doubting in fathoming the Buddha and the Dharma of the Buddhas. Even though a dharma may be extremely difficult to believe, one should nonetheless maintain faith in it. Nagarjuna
