Sometimes people like to use the word "ego" in Buddhist circles. And ignoring all the debate and different conceptions of what that word actually means, I'd like to ask what is not ego?

Dear Floating Abu

The 'ego' is not ego. The ego is simply a mental formation.

In the luminosity of the Eternal Spirit, the manifestations can be seen clearly for what they truely are.

'ego'/'self' - different words for the same concept? perhaps answering what isn't ego is as difficult as trying to find a self. Dharmakaya? but what is that? ultimately, inconcievable with a mind full of defilements. i'm reminded of the words of Shinran's Shonshinge -
The darkness of our ignorance is already broken through;
Still the clouds and mists of greed and desire, anger and hatred,
Cover as always the sky of true and real shinjin.

But though light of the sun is veiled by clouds and mists,
Beneath the clouds and mists there is brightness, not dark.
perhaps that points towards something more than ego or self?
