The Sanskrit word, "punya
" is often translated by the English word ‘merit’ but it can be translated as lucky (A Practical Sanskrit Dictionary, p. 164). According to the Buddha, luck or punya
is based upon giving (dâna
), spiritual cultivation (shîla
) and contemplation (bhâvana
). When taken together, the three add up to strengething our powers of deliberation or choice. As a result of this strengething, we find that our choices often lead to good fortune.
