Quote/s of the Day

Postby sattva » Tue Aug 16, 2011 6:40 pm

I do cryptograms on a regular basis and they use quotes on all kind of subjects. I really enjoy them and thought i would share them with all of you. Maybe you can share a quote also :)

This was the quote of the cryptogram that i just finished.

"Unless a life is activated by sustained purpose it can become a depressingly haphazard affair."

— Richard Guggenheimer

I thought this could apply to practice.

As a collection for inspiring quotes I can highly recommend "No Ajahn Chah".

It is free:

"It is the around-the-corner brand of hope that prompts people to action, while the distant hope acts as an opiate."

— Eric Hoffer

"If you do not wish a man to do a thing, you had better get him to talk about it; for the more men talk, the more likely they are to do nothing else. "

— Thomas Carlyle
(i found myself thinking of politics in the USA with this 2nd quote, but it can apply to anything.)

This is the cryptogram i just solved.

This one really spoke to me because of a relationship with a family member. What do you all think of this one?

"Family life is too intimate to be preserved by the spirit of justice. It can be sustained by a spirit of love which goes beyond justice. "

— Reinhold Niebuhr

About the quote in the previous post: From a Buddhist point of view, do you think this is true of all relationships?

I think the quote is largely vacuous.

I have heard that Poncho Villa's last words were, "tell them I said something".

Interesting thoughts above....

A new quote that i read so very long ago, probably in the 70's

"He who understands you is greater kin to you than your own brother. For even your own kindred may neither understand you nor know your true worth."
Kahlil Gibran (1883-1931)

there in the midst of it so alive and alone
words support like bone

-- Mercy Street by Peter Gabriel
“No lists of things to be done. The day providential to itself. The hour. There is no later. This is later. All things of grace and beauty such that one holds them to one's heart have a common provenance in pain. Their birth in grief and ashes.”
- Cormac McCarthy, The Road

Learn this from the waters:
in mountain clefts and chasms,
loud gush the streamlets,
but great rivers flow silently.
- Sutta Nipata 3.725

Without change, there would be no butterflies.

(I don't know the author - source was a collection of quotes-of-the-day which attributed it to 'anon.')

To attain the goal is to know and let go.
