Death toll expected to rise after quake devastates Christchurch
AT least 65 people are dead after a 6.3 earthquake hit Christchurch, New Zealand, today and authorities warn that number is expected to rise.
New Zealand Prime Minister John Key said "at least" 65 people had been killed in the earthquake, which hit Christchurch at 12.51pm today.
Rescuers frantically searched for survivors after the quake destroyed much of the city.
Thousands of panicked and tearful residents thronged the city's streets after the quake struck, just six months after a 7.0-magnitude tremor shattered buildings but did not claim any lives.
Police warned the latest earthquake had left people dead. Authorities warned of "multiple" fatalities. One office building housing 200 workers had collapsed, while Christchurch Cathedral's spire tumbled. ...
