Looking for stories of inconceivable kindness

Post by monktastic »

Last year, I found myself *very* moved by the story of the Peace Pilgrim (http://www.peacepilgrim.com). She strikes me as a modern-day Jesus. When I read her bio, that day's practice went better than any in recent months.

I'm looking for more stories like that. Ones that are easy to connect with.
Peace Pilgrim wrote: I became increasingly uncomfortable about having so much while my brothers and sisters were starving. Finally, I had to find another way. The turning point came when, in desperation and out of a very deep seeking for a meaningful way of life, I walked all one night through the woods. I came to a moonlight glade and prayed. I felt a complete willingness, without reservations, to give my life—to dedicate my life—to service. "Please use me!" I prayed to God. And a great peace came over me.

Peace Pilgrim wrote:Do you know God? Do you know there is a power greater than
ourselves which manifests itself within us as well as everywhere else
in the universe? This I call God. Do you know what it is to know
God, to have God’s constant guidance, a constant awareness of God’s
presence? To know God is to reflect love toward all people and all
creations. To know God is to feel peace within— a calmness, a serenity,
an unshakeableness which enables you to face any situation. To
know God is to be so filled with joy that it bubbles over and goes
forth to bless the world.
...
You can find God if you will only seek— by obeying divine laws,
by loving people, by relinquishing self-will, attachments, negative
thoughts and feelings. And when you find God it will be in the stillness.
You will find God within.
I know, she's crazy!

Handling your burden to the imaginary "God" is bhakti yoga, yoga of devotion but she seems stuck half a way but anyway merit is merit.

I think Peace Pilgrim's commitment to a life of peace, service, and justice is laudable. Good for her.

Being devotional to God or in Buddhism to Buddha is not simply a merit. It is the idios merit. Her efforts are not laughable they reflect her understanding for doing good not even for a one person but humanity. Peace is important and essential for human development however it comes only after righteousness as nations principle is at hand otherwise we see for example Arjuna who did not want to enter in fight but he had to in Mahabharata.
