I just noticed that I had a new message. When I went to read it, I discovered that it was three weeks old! The sender probably thought I was ignoring him all this time.
I have been coming here most days for last few weeks, so I probably missed seeing it at least a dozen times. I have to conclude that the new message count is really, really un-obvious.
Perhaps it would be helpful to have the new message count be distinctly different when non-zero compared to when it is zero?

Hi Keith. Another option may lie in the "settings" panel under "private messages". You can set the notification of a private message to "pop up" when you have a new one.
