Heart Sutra on Electric Guitar

Post by Huseng »

My friend Venerable Nakamura has decided to update the instruments used when reciting sutras.

He recites the Heart Sutra with an electric guitar instead of a drum.

I took this video just a few hours ago:

nice version ... same effect

By understanding everything you perceive from the perspective of the view, you are freed from the constraints of philosophical beliefs.
By understanding that any and all mental activity is meditation, you are freed from arbitrary divisions between formal sessions and postmeditation activity.

Cool! Now I want to hear a Mahakala puja with heavy distorted guitars and a drumset!

Huseng, which school of Buddhism does that guitar-playing monk practice?

That is a good question.

He has lived in India for over thirty years and is acquainted with his Holiness the Dalai Lama, but on the other hand he has practised Theravada.

He builds temples. Organized a conference on suicide. Travels around a lot. Writes children's stories with Buddhist themes and elements.

I'd say Bodhisattva-yana would best describe his activities.

Here is part II:

Yoga, drum, Kannon/Guanyin recitation, electric guitar, dancing...

Really funky stuff today.

It occurred to me how odd my life is becoming. :P
