It is obviously sudden and subtly gradual.
It is easy to find gradual elements. Thankfully. A school that only taught sudden approach would be a dangerous thing for many people, I think. My point was simply that I don't think Soto Zen is any less of a sudden path that others who carry that moniker.

Interesting discussion. :twothumbsup:

I wanted to mention there is another interesting looking discussion in the form of a new Dogen anthology edited by S. Heine coming out next month: http://www.amazon.com/Dogen-Historical- ... 62&sr=1-19" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

1 Myriad dharmas are only mind.
Mind is unobtainable.
What is there to seek?

2 If the Buddha-Nature is seen,
there will be no seeing of a nature in any thing.

3 Neither cultivation nor seated meditation —
this is the pure Chan of Tathagata.

4 With sudden enlightenment to Tathagata Chan,
the six paramitas and myriad means
are complete within that essence.

Because it's a long way from initially always "practised" just sitting to just sitting.
