Secret To A Happy Marriage Is Daily Meditation

“No lists of things to be done. The day providential to itself. The hour. There is no later. This is later. All things of grace and beauty such that one holds them to one's heart have a common provenance in pain. Their birth in grief and ashes.”
- Cormac McCarthy, The Road

in mountain clefts and chasms,
loud gush the streamlets,
but great rivers flow silently.

He's obviously more accomplished than me, but I find the constant drone of advice that Buddhists give of "just meditate" to be really monotonous. It's not a magic bullet, and doesn't really make for a good soundbite either.

Now the part about the Buddha saying a husband's duties include giving her jewelry and clothes... that would work.

Hi Retro and Andre

Andre, I hear where you are coming from.
I think meditation, on its own, isn't a silver bullet. Its the entire package that includes the whole N8P divided into sila, samadhi & panna. But I think when Bhante says 'just meditate', or words to that effect, I think it could be shorthand for developing sila, self-mastery and the getting of wisdom.
And if the path is pursued with earnestness and honesty, it will have the potential to assist with obstacles as they arise. As my teacher says - vicisitudes still come in daily life - its how you face them!
kind regards

Ben

Greetings,

Some good non-denominational advice would be "know thyself".

Metta,
Retro. :)

Yeah... I too think that it's not really helpful as a soundbite. But as Ben says, and I'm certainly committed to same ideal myself even though I cannot claim to be doing it very successfully, it is really about maintaing the whole package. Our teacher Goenka would probably offer the same advice that Retro suggests, 'Know thyself'. But for me, I'd prefer 'Care for yourself'--but of course in the fullest sense of the word 'care' (e.g. the cultivation of the brahma viharas).
With metta,

There is a sutta where the Buddha tells a married couple what they must do if they wish to be together in their next rebirth. Now that would have been good advice. Alas, I do not have the text, but the citation is AN.II,161. http://www.buddhisma2z.com/content.php?id=248
