I'm an unaffiliated, independent western Buddhist. I am without sangha and without teacher which used to bother me a great deal but doesn't any more. I take what I need and leave the rest from all the traditions. I am also a great skeptic and very much appreciate that tendency in the Buddha himself. I have a deep and abiding commitment to the path and love and gratitude to the many teachers I have experienced only through their books and in large public addresses. I don't have particularly lofty spiritual goals. I'm not shooting for enlightenment. I am very attracted to "Don't Know Mind". But, mostly, I want to become more kind, that's all.
You don't sound confused to me. You said you just want to be more kind- Buddha said it, John Lennon said it, Jesus said it, HH Dalai Lama said it- "All you need is love." You're home free, dude. Be as kind as you can, and enjoy.
