Hello all

Post by Sariputta »

Hi guys, I am Sariputta. I am originally from India and was born into a Jain family. Bauddha Dharma really fascinates me. I have a special interest for Buddhist history in India and SE Asia. I have the nick "Ajatashatru" in the DhammaWheel sister site.

Welcome Sari!

Are you a practicing Jain or have you "converted" to Buddhism?

Welcome to Dharma Wheel!

Born a Jain? Cool, are you still vegan? I guess I better not use my gun emoticon . . .

Jains, or for that matter no other Indic religious practitioners ever practiced veganism. Jains traditionally don't eat roots (potatoes, onions, garlic) and don't eat after sunset. I myself tried meat but am a vegetarian.

Eh...my almost devotional awe of the Tirthankars (I guess you can equate it to Hindu bhakti to Gods) will never go away, and I say with pride that the Jains had set the moral standard to a very high level. Having said that, for the most part I find Baudha-dharma (so far I have only read the Pali Canon and some Madhyamika) to be more practical and the best path for me to get out of this Samsara.
