Re: Why combine Dzogchen and Mahamudra?
And numerous others like mahasiddha Shakya Shri in recent history who had two large camps side by side, one on each, all the way back through history to Kumaradza who taught both Longchenpa and the 3rd Karmapa: http://www.kagyu.org.nz/content/aspirationprayer.html" onclick="window.open(th...

Re: Pointing out instructions
I don't think you know what lineage he is talking about. Meanwhile Sam himself has been working and publishing work on Dunhuang papers validating Dzogchen's much earlier roots. Secondly if you read his penultimate sentence you quoted he says that is the evidence so far but in academic terms the fac...

Re: Do any ancient Tibetan Buddhist texts give practical advice?
Westerners can get really far by doing periodic one to four week retreats and then have a once or twice a day practice routine.

Re: Why combine Dzogchen and Mahamudra?
I understand the differences between these two paths, and I understand their similarities, but I am not sure that I understand why someone (for example YMR) would combine the two, to the point of actually practicing both. Why would you need both? Any ideas? Yes, because most people don't get it whe...

Re: From a Namdrol post: socialism/capitalism
Actually, GK, Ron's correct on this issue. America is a corporatocracy. The military-industrial-complex is controlled by banks and weapons manufacturing companies. Then big media and other large businesses (like the government) become subsidiaries. Like GE manufactures large engines and machine part...

Re: Do any ancient Tibetan Buddhist texts give practical advice?
LOL Dharma is not about practical advice. You should consult the Talmud or the Koran for that. At the same time, these meditations are fundamentally transforming. The right and good naturally flows out of someone's actions when these methods are used. Dharma is like the heart of the law.

Re: Why combine Dzogchen and Mahamudra?
I agree. Well, on the one hand YMR might feel beholden to both because his father did both and there's that whole Rime kumbaya attitude. But in a very real way for most folks, doing both is due to doubt. Doubt in oneself and doubt in the method. A practitioner should dig deep into the instructions u...

Re: the ever-changing Western view of Madhyamaka
Perhaps one does't need Madhyamaka either. Masters use tools when needed. The complete path can be traversed without ever studying Madhyamaka. Rarely. N Really the Madhyamaka view are shastras based on the Pali suttas. There is source material for almost all Nagarjuna's points in the suttas. The Bu...

What about Sam Van Schaik's theory that Dzogchen's tantras were a Tibetan creation by folks like Nubchen who were ambitious to start their own lineage? Re: From a Namdrol post: socialism/capitalism
If a martial law is declared and the Army Reserve is ordered to fire on Americans, then you will see that, but only after a lot of civilians are killed. Actually, the US police forces, especially, have an "us versus them" mentality toward the general public. They don't really hesitate to ...

Re: From a Namdrol post: socialism/capitalism
The young people I talk to basically have resigned themselves to the notion that this whole thing is going to crash and no one can do anything about it. They are turning to optimistic new age notions of a revolution in global consciousness. But don't count out the American public yet. It just has t...

Re: From a Namdrol post: socialism/capitalism
Yep. Deja vu all over again. But nobody does anything. It is primarily the US who is responsible for all these NATO assaults on foreign countries. American youth in particular, even those who oppose such military adventures, are not really doing so much anymore. This is a good article about this: h...

Re: From a Namdrol post: socialism/capitalism
Well this is disastrous news for the global economy. I bet the market has not factored this in to the closing price of the indexes today. Expect a huge drop when the bell rings Monday morn. Wow. There's probably going to be some news about our heroes on the war front soon. NATO is planning military...

Another very serious danger to shorting the market is if there's a flash crash situation, there will be no one to buy back your shorts. =0.
