Re: Buddhism in the West

I'm not so sure that being "modern" is necessarily out of line with devotion, though -- I think it's a misreading the average person in the west that people in the west are "modern and without devotion"...Christianity is devotional while i'm in agreement with you here sraddha, i...

Re: Historicity of Mahayana Sutras -- Does it matter?

Are we as Buddhists striving for mere scientific/historical accuracy or are we seeking Final Liberation?  there was a time when i equated authenticity with historical accuracy. now i am of the opinion that authenticity lies in the value of the teachings and the results that they produce ...

Re: Approaching Nagarjuna and the Mulamadhyamakakarika...

thanks retro for your helpful reply. that's an approach that's the complete opposite of what i would have considered doing but i think it's a very sensible one and after obtaining several opinions on the matter, the one i'll take. or even "let it wash over you" i think that's quite likely ...

Re: Spiritual Arrogance

hi thorny, thankyou for the kind explanation...it very much reminds me of the admonition against hakarai or self-calculation that Shinran spoke of.

For straightforward behavior, practice in Dhyana (contemplation) may be dispensed with.
