Re: Buddhism in the West
I'm not so sure that being "modern" is necessarily out of line with devotion, though -- I think it's a misreading the average person in the west that people in the west are "modern and without devotion"...Christianity is devotional while i'm in agreement with you here sraddha, i...

Re: Historicity of Mahayana Sutras -- Does it matter?
Are we as Buddhists striving for mere scientific/historical accuracy or are we seeking Final Liberation?  there was a time when i equated authenticity with historical accuracy. now i am of the opinion that authenticity lies in the value of the teachings and the results that they produce ...

Re: Approaching Nagarjuna and the Mulamadhyamakakarika...
thanks Retro, you know...talking it over, i'm even thinking it might not be such a bad idea to re-acquaint myself with Abhidhamma before i consider things such as the Mahayana's take on it and later developments such as Madhyamika. decisions, decisions, with a heap 'o procrastinations lol. oh well, ...

That is why we must learn to give it up.
Just cast away!
Then you will see:
there's a way to let go

so as not to throw it away

Re: Approaching Nagarjuna and the Mulamadhyamakakarika...
thanks retro for your helpful reply. that's an approach that's the complete opposite of what i would have considered doing but i think it's a very sensible one and after obtaining several opinions on the matter, the one i'll take. or even "let it wash over you" i think that's quite likely ...

Re: Spiritual Arrogance
i wonder if arrogance, of any kind, is in part brought about by a lack of honesty in the way in which one faces oneself and others. i don't know, perhaps.

Re: A Householder's Training
hi thorny, thankyou for the kind explanation...it very much reminds me of the admonition against hakarai or self-calculation that Shinran spoke of.
plus you've given me a little taster of the 42 Sections Sutra which is currently on my shelf waiting to be picked up!
