Re: Important koans in The Blue Cliff Record
I know it's not something you're supposed to say out loud, but I feel like I largely grasp the underlying themes of many of the Koans, after studying (and experiencing) Zen for about five years now. So this is partly why I don't go through the book with fervor, sometimes I'll pick it up and read on...

Re: New book on Ch'an
Agree with the critiques. A poet who can translate Chinese, but afaik has no background in Buddhist (or Daoist) studies, Sanskrit, Chinese Buddhist history, or actual practice. Repeats popular misunderstandings, and shares the hubris, of authors likes Watts who were simply unqualified to speak about...

Re: Am I misunderstanding Soto Zen’s zazen?
Not possible though before passing the gateless gate (as said by Hakuin many years ago). Just to nitpick since "gateless gate" has been mentioned a few times: This is a popular mistranslation of the word mumonkan 無門關. 無 - no, negation 門 - gate 關 - barrier, checkpoint, a frontier pass. So ...

Thanks in return for mentioning Dr. Yu's book. She was a professor of mine years ago, but I've not kept up with her work. Now I'm eager to check out that text.

Re: History of the Extend Life Ten Phrase Kuan Yin Sutra in China and Japan
I don't have definite information, but seem to recall that Hakuin himself cites the source as 高王觀世音真經, the High King Avalokiteshvara Sutra? Reading that short text, one could see that the Jukku Kannongyo might have come about as a distillation of, or pulling lines from, it. Some info here speculatin...

Re: Your interest in other Buddhist sects
- are you interested in, or do you use the practices of, any sects outside of Zen? If so, which ones? What are the practices? - do you identify with the Mahayana lineage at large, more so than non-Mahayana sects and ideas? If so, why? Yes, I have done tokudo in two other Japanese Buddhist tradition...

Re: Book suggestions for Tendai??
All Tendai monks are required to complete Exoteric and Esoteric training on Mt. Hiei. Just to point out that Tendai Jimon-shu, based at Miidera-ji/Onjo-ji, has its own training locations, requirements, and curriculum. For folks interested in that side of things, the writings of Chisho Daishi (Enchi...

Re: Looking for Zen
Pittsburgh for sure (a group connected to us): https://ironcityrinzai.org/ Just to add, it is a misconception that one need live close to one's teacher. Of course it's best to see the teacher as often as possible. But especially in the first years of practice, it's enough to do so periodically (and ...

Re: Is Dzogchen less intense than Zen?
Just to add, since Zen's emphasis on group/communal retreat has been mentioned a few times: this is only part of the picture. It's true that Zen practice forms largely have monastic origin, and that the communal style of practice - even to the point of sleeping and sitting on the same spot surrounde...

Re: Is Dzogchen less intense than Zen?
From the Zen side, it's also important to recognize the functions of things like a shout. Affectations of intensity are not the point. Certainly we can say that Zen monasteries, and retreat periods like sesshin, are generally quite regimented and exhaustive in terms of practice schedule. But underly...

Re: Buddha's mudra
Just curious, where was that?
There is another mudra commonly used in meditation in Rinzai circles aside from hokkai jo-in, but it's not this one. I've never heard of Zennies using the mudra of Amida.

Re: American Soto Zen
"Theologically", I find it hard to take the idea that Dogen emphasised kensho seriously. We are talking about one of the most prolific and explicit writers in all of Zen, and kensho is hardly mentioned and when it is it seems quite sedated. According to Kokyo Henkel, in Shobogenzo: Sho (v...

Re: American Soto Zen
Honestly not really sure why we should give any thought to the words of someone who is trying to tell us that there are no longer any people whatsoever that can teach us Zen in the Soto lineage. What are the outcomes of this? Either giving up or just drama. Matylda's approach isn't constructive, no...

Re: American Soto Zen
that Genjo Conan has been describing as his experience of Soto Zen. And when he wrote of his frustration with this topic, I imagine it is the overlooking of this realm of Soto that perhaps is at the heart of it. He can set the record straight himself I am sure. Yes, fair enough. FWiW Genjo's posts ...
