Re: Is the universe made of the same substance?
According to scientist, this universe is made of energy and space. there is one HUGE difference. unlike anything that has come before, modern scientific elements were not themselves naively arrived at prior to analysis . (part of this section of this series ) to equate them with classical notions o...

Hayagriva mantra
Is there a Hayagriva mantra that does not require empowerment? I know he's an esoteric deity, but I'm asking on the off chance there is such a thing. There's one mantra listed here: http://www.onmarkproductions.com/html/kannon.shtml#batou" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; on t...

If you think it is Critical For Practice, you've fallen into Eternalism. If you think it is Not Critical For Practice, you've fallen into Annihilationism.tobes wrote:Critical to what?

Re: Conceptuality in Buddhism
Even with a causal world, with karmic chains, how can a person know for certain what will happen next? Can you explain that? Simplifying: According to Buddhist phenomenology, not only are there no hairs on your head, there is no real head. YOU SEE hairs on your head. How many hairs you see on your ...

Re: Conceptuality in Buddhism
Look, quoting random bits of scripture like a Protestant missionary is not likely to be productive. There are plenty of sutras and shastras that put the above sound bite in a much broader context, and the fact remains that traditionally, Mahayana taught that enlightenment leads to omniscience, as yo...

Re: Conceptuality in Buddhism
My understanding comes straight from the Diamond Sutra: It is because the mind is unreal that all past, present and future minds are known to the Tathagata. Because his consciousness is perfectly empathetic and unimpeded by false ego boundaries, anything you have felt, ("feeling", as I use...

Re: Delusion
It sure can be, if you let it. Eg. I only accepted Namdrol's thesis that awakening is instantaneous once its philosophical context had been stated unambiguously.PadmaVonSamba wrote:nonsense.

Re: Delusion
A gradual series of events precludes everything . Anything can preclude everything else if you let it. Ultimately, it can even preclude itself. Even you have direct perception of this. Do you have direct perception of my direct perception, and do you perceive that yours is in fact perception as opp...

Re: Delusion
Even though awakening is sudden, it only happens if a gradual series of events preclude it. Suppose that's true, but this is not my question. My question is, how do you know this? Direct perception? What makes this generalized condition on the nature of reality more than just another passing cloud ...

Re: Delusion
Cessation occurs when, through awakened insight, one removes a cause of further arising. Without awakening, first, there is no analytical cessation. Thanks, but why and how are you so certain that awakening is instantaneous? Did you wake up once or twice and did each awakening take no more than a s...

Re: Delusion
Serious, serious question about which I have no preconceived ideas, I swear: What is the relationship between cessation and awakening? If cessation cannot be instantaneous or gradual, temporal or atemporal, how can awakening be caused and instantaneous?

Re: Delusion
I was once invited to a non-event and when I didn't show up there, it wasn't even happening. What else was happening at the time? Awakening however is a permanent state, from which one cannot regress. I can't imagine who you think would regress from awakening. I also don't answer pointless question...

If enlightenment is spontaneous, what practice can bring you cessation?
If enlightenment is gradual, what practice can't bring you cessation?
