Re: Platform Sutra

Thanks adept! Can you tell me a bit about the background (your own words) about this teaching, this teacher, I'm assuming this is Berkeley Buddhist Monastery? If so, I'm traveling there soon on family business and can add to my itinerary... Yes it is Berkeley Buddhist Monastery. Years ago when I fi...

I highly recommend this series of Dharma talks on the Sixth Patriarch's Platform Sutra, from City of Ten Thousand Buddhas.
So far there's 142 videos. I'm slowly making my way through them. :coffee:

Re: the Hsu Yun appreciation thread

I find Master Xuyun to be an absolute inspiration. His longevity is remarkable. I'm not sure if it's mentioned in any of the works by/about him, but what did his food and drink consumption consist of ? Obviously diet and mild exercise, as well as a meditative discipline, is a major contributor to hi...

Re: in practice chan do I need teacher !

To practice Ch'an, that is after you learn what you need to know to get started, you don't need a teacher. Unless you want to move forward in the sangha. Or until you have a problem, or get stuck in your practice. Or if you want kung-an instruction. Or a lot of other fun things. If the problem is, ...

Re: in practice chan do I need teacher !

Just to clarify, I do have some formal in-person training from years ago, before my current life situation. I learned zazen in a Soto environment and sometime later learned samatha/vipassana at a Thai Forest monastery. However my interests are in Ch'an and possibly Rinzai, as I think Rinzai is close...

Re: in practice chan do I need teacher !

Greetings. I have a dilemma regarding this topic. I don't have a teacher and use any resources I can to practice and study. My life situation prevents me from leaving my house for anything more than a few hours at a time. I have a son with a disability/special needs. Between myself and my wife, some...

Developing Compassion For Humans

Hello everyone. I've drifted in and out of Buddhist practice for a number of years, mainly due to periods of dark depression and low self-esteem. Having come through two meltdowns and now feeling relatively settled in my life situation, I've returned once again to Buddhism. One major stumbling block...

Re: Shingon Temple in UK

The group is still up and running on the light ship according to Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/GloucesterBuddhistCentre?fref=ts Thanks Seishin. Yes, I believe a Buddhist group is still running, but it's now a secular group and not Shingon. Tenjo Hopwood has nothing to do with it. Not s...

Re: Shingon Temple in UK

If anyone is interested in finding a Shingon temple in UK, my dharma brother Tenjo Hopwood runs a temple that is temporarily hosted at the Sulla Lightship, located in Gloucester. For more info visit this link: http://www.lightshiptherapies.net/BC/index.html" onclick="window.open(this.href...

Re: Shingon Temple in UK

I actually contacted them a few months ago but never heard anything back. The website looks as if it's been a couple of years since it was updated.
It does look a good setup but with the non-contact, I'm not sure if it's still active.

Re: New Avatamsaka-sutra translation planned.

I had a dream last night where I found myself in an abandoned cave/temple somewhere in Asia. On a stone plinth in the middle of the room was several large leatherbound books. I opened them and guess what ? A full English translation of the Avatamsaka sutra complete with a page by page commentary. I...

Re: Tendai and Pretend-ai

I dunno Jikan, they say perception sells these days, so what have the 'orthodox' ones done to 'cash in' on this? Seems like the heterodox have used this as their advantage point... Well, one thing we've done is steadfastly refuse to cash in. Instead, the emphasis has been on practice, and on traini...

Re: Use of Mantras for lay people

Of course nembutsu is always an option for everyone. There are specific formal nembutsu practices that are taken up by ordinands under particular circumstances, but to the best of my understanding anyone who wants to try nembutsu is free to do so. I must say that this has proven to be an excellent ...
