Re: Huang Po in context

White Lotus wrote:I would like to pay my respects to Ch'an Master Hsi Yun (Huang Po).
I consider myself to have a direct realization of the Mind of Huang Po and see this as beyond and superior to a direct experience of emptiness.

Imo you are lucky he is dead and out of arms reach. :)

Re: A new low in religious scholarship

I don't see that much problem here. Just compare it to a Kalachakra initiation: "The three exalted initiations are as follows: the vase initiation is the gnosis of bliss and emptiness that arises from the disciple touching the consort's breasts. The secret initiation is the gnosis of bliss and...

Re: "This"

It's weird but true, you can get attached to emptiness. Here's how: 1. Impute to it the properties of a view. 2. Impute ownership of that view. 3. Impute a high value to the view, and to the ownership. And for advanced attachers, 4. Exaggerate the value of your new view without limit. 5. Denigrate ...

Re: The Buddha Speaking of Huatou Practice?

Huatou practice is not signless. While it means "before thoughts" it is not even the same as Caodong's before thoughts (Dogen: non-thinking). It is not signless for in that case no question and no doubt could be used. It is not mere "resting in the natural state" or "non-ab...

Re: The Buddha Speaking of Huatou Practice?

Hey, maybe im grasping at straws :) The sutta i linked to, along with the greater and lesser emptiness suttas, are as close as i can find so far to a non developmental enlightenment model in the pali canon. Not that i have looked too hard, but it would be nice to run into. What do you mean by "...

Re: Powers of evolution

I think that buddhism is losing to the powers of evolution. This means that the power of a population is always stronger than any existing and very feeble Sangha. Is there any truly international Sangha? A Sangha that is independent of the power of a particular human population? (By Sangha is here ...

Re: The Buddha Speaking of Huatou Practice?

I don't see how much this has to do with huatou. Ever done huatou practice? If Pali is one of those languages where "heart" can also be translated as mind or soul or self, its a pretty good description of huatou practice. And if you will notice, the passage is about "signless concent...

Animitto Sutta: The Signless translated from the Pali by Maurice O'Connell Walshe © 2007–2010 The Pali title of this sutta is based on the PTS (Feer) edition. [1] [The Ven. Moggallaana has described how, with the aid of the Buddha, he has passed through all the jhaanas[2] right up to the "sphe...

Re: What does this Dogen passage mean to you?

"I was hoping we could get more at the experiential sense of it" It is a form of religious writing that Dogen uses, a kind of literature. This is a forum where what we can use are words. So the question is, what is an "experiential sense" style? Is it perhaps expressing the same...

Re: What does this Dogen passage mean to you?

If I could see what kanji characters he used, it would help immensely. Those characters which I am pretty sure he would have used can be read in some really rather interesting ways, far beyond that of the English given here. Not that the English would be wrong, just that translation drops various t...

Re: What does this Dogen passage mean to you?

"Worlds" of sentient beings are also called the 18 Sense Realms. The entire "world" we assume to be external to us is actually only present within the limitations of our senses. That is what is meant by the world of sentient beings in all these phenomena, because these phenomena...

Thats part of it in a mere verbal sense. I was hoping we could get more at the experiential sense of it. Its a limited medium tho, might not be possible here.

Re: Essentials of Practice and Enlightenment for Beginners

it's not m0rl0ck's essay but a writing by Hanshan Deqing, one of the most famous Buddhist teachers of Ming China. Yes and lets be clear, Hanshan is the only one in this thread qualified to give advice about practice. That is a strange statement. You are saying that you are qualified to know and dec...

What does this Dogen passage mean to you?

Lets take Dogens advice and try to examine the meaning of this: It is not only that there is water in the world, but there is a world in water. It is not just in water. There is also a world of sentient beings in clouds. There is a world of sentient beings in the air. There is a world of sentient be...
