Re: Historical Buddha

Do we have any historical proof that Shakyamuni Buddha existed ? There is reference to him in the Jain texts i used have a Jain scripture years ago so read it, whereas the Buddha made vague references to mahavira in contrast. I don't know if they met but they were teaching in and around the same ti...

Re: Who was the author (or authors) of the Pure Land Sutras?

If I can just add something here. I read a very good article about all Buddhist sutras which unfortunately i can't find lol but it made a very good point which I'd like to share. The sutra's as we all know can be hard to read, repeating verse's over and over etc, the author of the article pointed ou...

Re: is a home made statue acceptable?

The Lamrim teachings say: firstly, Buddha statues cannot be judged by outward appearance. Every statue is worth the due respect. And secondly, it is a very meritious deed to make a statue or paint a picture of a Buddha or a diety. It is very demeritorious to make images of the Buddha, etc., that do...

Re: Taking precepts?

Hi, what are the ways of taking precepts? What if one wants to stop drinking and wants to take a vow to stop drinking. How can one go about it? Its very easy, in front of a Buddha image recite: I undertake the rule of training to refrain from killing living creatures. I undertake the rule of triani...

Re: is a home made statue acceptable?

Hi everyone, I have 3 large buddha statues at home and recently I have been wanting to have a female presence on my shrine table. I am only beginning to understand the role kwan yin has and I have decided to add her to my shrine. I don't want a tiny statue as it would look odd next to my very large...

Re: Uposatha

I'm a Pure Land Buddhist and was raised Pure Land. My entire family practices uposatha. In Vietnamese, the practice is called ngày ăn chay ("day of fasting"). I know traditional Chinese Buddhists practice this as well. You decide how often to practice it yourself and we generally time it ...

Re: Uposatha

Do you mean just practicing on uposatha days? Or observing precepts, doing puja, etc.? I mean taking the full 8 precepts and limiting ones food and not sleeping in a bed as per the Buddha's instruction, I know it sounds quite extreme, but for 1 or 2 times a month. Just curious how other people prac...

Uposatha

HI, Does anyone practice Uposatha on here? When I started my Buddhist practice I was began with the Theravada tradition. I observed it then but when I realised Theravada was not something I fully understood and moved to Pureland I stopped. I want to get into it again, I think it would benefit me gre...

Re: Fish?

I personally cannot see a way round nor should there be a way. We become Buddhist because we want to attain enlightenment an rescue sentient beings from suffering, it kind of steps on the toes of this when meat/fish is consumed. The first precept we take in practice is I undertake the rule of train...

Re: Fish?

To avoid terror to living beings, let the disciple refrain from eating meat... the food of the wise is that which is consumed by the Sadhus( holy men); it does not consist of meat... There may be some foolish people in the future that will say that I permitted meat-eating and partook of meat myself...

Re: Fish?

You very simply should not eat any form of meat be it animal or fish. Any one or "buddhist" school that advises you do so is bending the rules to suit themselves. Which rules? As I've been at pains to point out, the 3 living traditions within the Vinaya all have similar rules regarding me...

Re: Fish?

The Buddha was very clear not to kill sentient beings, as all things fear death. For example when I net my goldfish to put them into their new tank they freak out, they're afraid. You very simply should not eat any form of meat be it animal or fish. Any one or "buddhist" school that advise...

Re: Namo Amitabha Buddha

Is it not better to recite in the original sanskrit as written in the sutras rather than Namu Amida Butsu or Namo Amituofo? I personally prefer to recite Namo Amitabha however it really doesn't matter Amitufo is just a language translation that means the same. Remember its mindfulness of Amitabha a...

Re: Clearing up the Pure Land sutras

If, when I attain Buddhahood, humans and devas in my land should not all be of one appearance, and should there be any difference in beauty, may I not attain perfect Enlightenment. If, when I attain Buddhahood, women in the immeasurable and inconceivable Buddha-lands of the ten quarters who, having...

Re: Clearing up the Pure Land sutras

This is a very interesting post. However like a lot of other posts on other sites, it's seems to be filled with doubt and an effort to (by those with doubt) to prove the sutras are untrue. There are differences in the sutras throughout the canon as they were retold orally and then written down and w...
