Re: How did you find Shingon?
Hi Jake. 1. My study of Japanese martial arts led me to Fudo. Fudo led me to Shingon. 2. I study at the Honolulu Liliha Shingon mission. Rev. Finch teaches our classes. 3. Books. Kukai Major Works, Kukai On the Philosophy Of Language, btts online.com. 4. More opportunities for learning from ordained...

Re: Strangeness while turning off toughts
As a dull minded person, lately I increased my attention and concentration because of meditation. One thing that I notice is that sometimes I am able to simply shut up all my toughts, all my discursive toughts, the internal speech that is always present. I know, from reading, that one should just b...

Re: Lying because you're stuck, but still for your own benef
Hoping you find peace first in this situation. I'm not really qualified to give advice on this...however here's my opinion. If I'm not mistaken, one of the differences between the average human and a Buddha is in the knowledge of the effect of actions. We're giving precepts and guidelines because of...

Re: Polygamy / Polyandry & Buddhism
My first thought to this... Is it better to have twenty wives or have one wife and 40 women on the side? It's common place if the west to engage in relationships of a sexual nature with many people even if one is in a committed marriage...and I believe this is spreading. Interestingly though, in wes...

Re: eating seafood
That's the question.... Volition here is defined as being able to make choices without being influenced by others? Are we 100% sure the plant doesn't possess volition in the same context as we do? Is this to also suggest that those of us who can act from a place of will are also completely unbiased,...

Re: what the differences between Korean Cheontae and Tendai?
There is a pretty interesting (to me) book titled The Marathon Monks of Hiei by John Stevens. It gives a pretty thorough history of Tendai. Maybe it will help.

Re: eating seafood
There's an interesting study that was done on plants and how they also don't want to be eaten. A book was also written on this. The idea is that we haven't learned how to listen well enough to hear the suffering of plants. Like being in another country and not speaking the language. So, if in fact p...

Re: Eight Mahayana Precepts
Hi all. Does anyone with experience have any insight on the sixth precept and how an athlete or someone who does manual labor for his or her occupation would be able to uphold this precept. Any information, reading material or opinions are appreciated.

Re: In another life
Aloha, thanks for the welcome. :) I qishenjing actually posted this. Not sure how or why it shows Shiho...but I'm sure there's a reason. :) There's actually a temple here and they just recently in May took a trip to Koyasan. My wife and I are looking forward to the next trip as we are both very draw...

Is there a difference
Hello everyone. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn more about Shingon as I am very new to Shingon Buddhism. A questions I have wondered for a while is what's the difference between the OM and ON? They both seem to be pronounced differently and so I'd think have vibratory components as it rel...
