"Bhikkhus [monks, the Buddha said, holding a fleck of cow dung in his hand], if even if that much of permanent, everlasting, eternal selfhood/metaphysical being (attabhava), not inseparable from the idea of change, could be found, then this living the holy life could not be taught by me."...

Re: Are Buddhists Wrong about Anatma?
It is of course, true that the Buddha denied the existence of a "soul" or "self "in the narrow sense of the word (one might say, in accordance with the command, deneget seipsum (deny himself ), (Mark, VIII.341) but this is not what our writers mean to say, or are understood by t...

Re: Are Buddhists Wrong about Anatma?
Ive just finished a long debate with a Hindu about this To shorten it down, Buddha taught anatta of the 5 aggregates and criticised holding theories on a soul or Self The Hindus have a similar teaching of anatta with "neti neti" or "not this, not that" and they to reguard aggrega...

Re: Gay Marriage: What Would Buddha Do?
3. It is unsuitable to have intercourse in an inappropriate orifice, such as engaging in the manner of animals. Strange since animals have sex the hetrosexual way and the homosexual way, so vagina and anal sex so does this mean that all orifices are a no no? It doesnt really say what an inappropria...

Re: Gay Marriage: What Would Buddha Do?
Hey Drolma Sorry to be crass but why does it matter "where you put it"? Why is one place wholesome and the other unwholesome? Surely its the intent behind the act itself that decides if it is unwholesome or not, not "geographical" locations? metta friend Trying to not be crass m...

Re: Gay Marriage: What Would Buddha Do?
It is true, that HHDL has identified gay sex as sexual misconduct. I believe this is based on wrong orifice so it's reasonable to assume this would apply to certain kinds of straight sex too. But there's so many rules about this, such as the proper time of day for sex. I too, have heard that he say...

Re: Gay Marriage: What Would Buddha Do?
In response to the OP i dont think the Buddha wouldnt care that much about gay marriage, he wasnt even that concerned with marriage between straight people Is homosexuality unwholesome? As a gay man my answer is of course no  However this isnt coloured by my own personal view, on reading the su...

Mahayana Emptiness and Hindu Atman/Brahman
Hey Was interested to know, how does emptiness in mahayana negate the Atman/Brahman concept in hinduism? In Advaita Vedanta they dont see that which is anicca as self they see it as anatta, not self Hence they only see that which is permanent as real and self (atman/Brahman) Doesnt emptiness only ex...

Re: Is breathing meditation alone good?
The Buddha said it will take one all the way to nibbana and that it was this practice that he engaged in while under the Bodhi Tree, however i feel it does need to be complimented with other meditations such as loving-kindness, compassion etc etc

Re: Historicity of Mahayana Sutras -- Does it matter?
So the concepts of Buddha's truth body and "decay body" are found directly in the Nikayas, which the Mahayana sutras further expound.
The question is was it expanded beyond its intended meaning?

Re: Buddhism in the West
I think more needs to be done to teach the Dharma to other ethnic groups and social classes. Great lamas have spoken at Harvard and MIT, but has a great lama ever spoken at a historically black college? Has one ever lectured at a community college? Has one ever lectured at a homeless shelter? I thi...
