Re: "highest practices" and anti-intellectualism

What, then, is the corrective? How can we sidestep this pitfall? (Have you looked at the Dunning-Kruger Effect I linked to earlier?) By consciously making an effort not to talk or act beyond one's competence and jurisdiction. Doing so, however, can prove to be alienating and make one a misfit. Just...

Re: "highest practices" and anti-intellectualism

I'll speak from my experience in the Dzogchen "meatspace", as I haven't really practiced in Zen communities: I have absolutely noticed the trend you're speaking of. Often rigpa/pure view/one taste/abiding/etc seems to be used as either an excuse for bad behavior, but more often as an excu...

Adama is a Cylon. [his decommissioning speech] Adama: The Cylon War is long over, yet we must not forget the reasons why so many sacrificed so much in the cause of freedom. The cost of wearing the uniform can be high, but... [very long pause] Adama: sometimes it's too high. You know, when we fought...

Kuan Yin from Amitayus Teaching Sutras mural in Mogao Cave #57 http://abload.de/img/560px-mural_avolokiteycrab.jpg :anjali: This image made a powerful impression on me when I saw it years ago in a Nat Geo magazine article on the Dunhuang caves. I tore it out and framed it. Thank you for posting it.

:anjali: Fear of being bitten is what makes spiders scary, right? Maybe try to put yourself in the spider's position. If a giant wrecked your house with a broom, or rolled over onto you while they napped, you would be unhappy and perhaps bite them. Not so unreasonable. If you see a spider going abou...

Grigoris offered very good advice. All I would like to add is that given your experiences with the Russian healthcare system, it is not surprising you are having anxiety attacks. I hope you find relief soon.

Re: Retaking Refuge?

This may be a slight tangent, but has anyone been charged a fee for an initial precepts ceremony or a renewal ceremony? It was something I came across on a group's website and it struck me as odd. Our Sangha has big expenses and they charge fees for lectures and empowerments. Most of the time they ...
