Re: Why not teach buddhism, instead of your mind?
Another translation offers this: If you can see through this, your Zen training is complete. Present a sword to a swordsman; Don't offer a poem unless you meet a poet. When speaking say one third of it; Don't give the whole thing at once. Maybe it means that when we communicate with others there is...

We adopted a girl about 7 years ago, and so far it has worked out well for us. We'll see what happens when she becomes a teenager.

Re: Weight
I'm sorry about your loss. Maybe your weight problem will rectify itself in time, but it is dangerous for your weight to get extremely low. If you didn't have this problem before, how was your eating different then? Techically, I shouldn't have used "root vegetables" but "tubers"...

Re: Weight
What's a root vegetable? I think there's some nuts laying around here. Best, Laura White potatoes, sweet potatoes and yams are root vegetables that are higher in calories. With white potatoes you can use some salt, water/milk and extra virgin olive oil and mash them; they are tasty that way. Or mak...

Re: Weight
You don't have to eat meat to get enough calories. Grains, legumes, many root vegetables and nuts are all decent sources of calories. Most fruits are lower in calories but avocados and durians are good fruit sources.

Re: Weight
You lost 60 WHAT in the last 5 weeks?
It sounds to me like maybe you're not getting enough calories. Try eating more higher calorie foods. Try eating more. You might need to eat more than 3 times/day.

Re: Poll: Which Operating System Do You Use?
Linux has vulnerabilities, but security updates are frequent and free. Moreover, if one only runs a personal user-id, instead of root (i.e., admin)--normal for Linux users--security breaches are very limited. One can disconnect from the internet to run root, which gives added protection. Any use of...

Re: Poll: Which Operating System Do You Use?
No virus scan just means you are willing to accept the consequences if and when your machine is penetrated. It's not like Linux is that difficult to penetrate, it's just more difficult that Windows. Computer security classes regularly demonstrate penetration techniques on Linux machines. I was shoc...

Re: Poll: Which Operating System Do You Use?
I will say Mac's security is good. However, if you know what anti-virus software to use for Windows, you are all set. There is more to it than that. Another problem is users doing things that make getting viruses more likely. Many viruses come through email attachments so it's important to be caref...

Re: Flooding in Bangkok
Thanks for giving us reports on the flood. I'm glad to hear that it is getting better. I imagine that the farming areas in Thailand were also flooded and the crops damaged, and that's going to make the food prices go up. I was in the San Fransisco Bay Area during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. Tho...

Re: Buddhism on God
However, I don't think that the English word God is quite the stable concept you make it out to be. :anjali: No, I don't think it is stable either. We all know what the common concept of God is. Monotheists who are deeply into spirituality often see God in a totally different way. When we discuss i...

Re: Buddhism on God
In the end we could have a situation where everyone at least has a clear idea of what they are talking about*, and then the Buddhists would of course smile and ignore them all. That's what I do. I think that Buddhism is complete in itself, and thinking about monotheistic religions isn't going to he...

There is a "ASK A TEACHER" section at Zen Forum International. I'm not trying to push you in the direction of Zen but this is something I'm aware of and thought might be helpful. Here is a link to the section http://www.zenforuminternational.org/viewforum.php?f=32&sid=7cc57c573dde335eb...

Re: Continuity / Discontinuity; Eternalism / Annihilationism
Why isn't samanantara-pratyaya a type of continuity? You can think of it that way if you wish, as each moment in combination with the laws of nature produces the next moment. However, that doesn't mean that objects have a selves that persist. Where do these selves in objects come from? Think about ...

Where does the idea that Vajrayana is superior/faster than other Buddhist schools come from? We know that some Vajrayana students say that, but do:
the sutras say that?
the enlightened masters say that?

I disagree that phenomena cannot be perceived. He is saying there are no phenomenna qua phenomena, rather, there are only appearances. I think you are right. It's not clear to me in the first paragraph, but is in the second from last paragraph of the first post. The inseeing or understanding that p...

Re: Own-being cannot be cognized
Voidness is not a quality of objectivity, phenomena being their absence of themselves phenomenally as conceptual objects. Phenomena cannot be perceived at all, they are appearances integral in their perceiving, which is why they are called "void", or "dependently originated". &q...

Re: Effect of Technology on Modern Day Buddhism
I was a Buddhist long before the internet. But personally I love the internet. It is a useful tool that makes information and teachings very accessible. Like anything it is how you use it; you can use it in a wholesome or unwholesome way. This is the information age and more information is better t...
