Re: Stream of Lapis And ChNN namchö medicine Buddha …same?

To correct some errors in this thread. 'River of Lapis Lazuli' is the practice text composed by Karma Chagme for the Medicine Buddha empowerment ritual from the Namcho terma teachings, as revealed by Terton Mingyur Dorje. Karma Chagme acted as the Terton's treasure assistant for the entire cycle, an...

Re: Western-Born (English) Tibetan Buddhist Teachers Like Alan Wallace

Hello All, Actually I am searching for Western-Born (English) Tibetan Buddhist Teachers who have Wikipedia entries. A lot of recommendations don’t seem to have Wikipedia entries so it is totally impossible to obtain necessary information about them. Someone I know is desperately searching for such ...

Re: trekcho/tögel earth terma?

Konchog Chidu is an earth terma which contains trekcho and togel. The instructions for this are rarely given however and it is only the development stage which is widely practiced.

Re: New Topic

I wonder though, if this has not also been a problem all the way through in traditional dharma societies? When I say 'I wonder' I really mean: I don't really know. But it can be inferred by reading great commentaries etc - the 8 worldly concerns are always the norm; resisting them via a genuine eng...

Re: New Topic

Do westerners only aspire to be Buddhist as long as it doesn't conflict with their pre-existing world views? ... It seems like many are “ insert political label here ” before they are Buddhist. I have been involved in Buddhism for many years, and I agree with your observations. It seems that you ei...

Re: Buddhist Hell seems a bit much

You are looking at it in terms of justice, which is a Western concept, bound up with the gods of the ancients (primarily Zeus) and Mosaic law, and divine providence. In Buddhism, there are no divine arbiters of justice, there are only actions and their results. The hells are projections of our own m...

Re: Liberate all living beings

Shantideva: ‘If the perfection of giving
Means dispelling the poverty of beings,
How did the earlier protectors perfect it,
When beings are still poor?’

It is taught that the perfection of giving
Is the intention to give to all beings
All of one’s possessions, along with the results of doing ...

From the Uttaratantra: Nothing whatsoever to be removed, Not the slightest thing to be added. Truly look at truth, and truth is seen. When seen, it is complete liberation. The element is empty of adventitious stains Which are characterized by their total emptiness, But it is not empty of supreme qua...

Re: New Sakya Translation: Sonam Tsemo's Commentary on the Bodhicaryāvatāra

Its certainly interesting to see the different directions later Sakya masters went in with their commentaries. Lhopa Kunkhyen Rinchen Pal followed Sonam Tsemo very closely apart from the use of logic. Thogme Zangpo seemed to depart from their model somewhat, with a different structure and style. But...

New Sakya Translation: Sonam Tsemo's Commentary on the Bodhicaryāvatāra

Dear Dharma Friends, We have a major new translation to be available on June 3 - Sonam Tsemo's (1142-1182) commentary on Śāntideva's classic guide to the Buddhist path, the Bodhicaryāvatāra or 'Entering the Bodhisattva Conduct'. Sonam Tsemo's commentary, reflecting his many years of study with philo...

While the cat’s away.... ********** It would be even better if they contributed more quotes from Karma Kagyu masters regarding Shentong. But please remember that it was Karmapa III, Rangjung Dorje, that formally established Shentong as the view. Earlier citations won’t have that vocabulary...

Re: Yidam w Togal as dzogrim

Although you could argue KonChok Chidu (or even LaDrup Tigle Gyachen) are not yidam practices, in some sense they are Lama practices that function as yidam practices, and both of these definitely have Togal as well. Konchok Chidu has everything, soup to nuts... This is true but according to Tsewang...

New translation: Commentary on Distinguishing Consciousness and Primordial Wisdom

Some of you will be familiar with Karmapa Rangjung Dorje's text, ' Distinguishing Consciousness and Primordial Wisdom ', or Namshe Yeshe , and perhaps its well-known commentary by Jamgon Kongtrul. Now we have a new English translation of another commentary, 'The Lamp that Dispels Darkness', composed...

I think perhaps we need to think about motivation and application here. If I understand correctly the position held by Lama Jampa it is not about sectarianism per se. ( but he is not my teacher) it's about collecting wangs in a 'hobbyist' fashion without the practical possibility of doing them just...

Re: Sapan on distinctions and diversity

One wonders what Sapan would have made of Konchok Chidu, etc. And Lamdre itself is not immune to charges of Tibetan innovation. He does say on the Three Vows Many religious traditions abound, hailed As whispered and single recipient traditions. They are acceptable if they agree with the tantras But...

Re: Sapan on distinctions and diversity

Sapan's consistent point is to purify corruptions of the dharma by always pointing back to the sutras, sastras and tantras as sources of truth and exposing whatever does not appear in those sources as Tibetan innovations. His criticisms of mahamudra, Vajrayogini blessing bestowal, the distinction of...

Re: dalai lama conflict science buddhism change

Karma Thinley Rinpoche wrote an interesting essay on this topic, supporting the idea that some of the non-definitive teachings - like Mount Meru and eclipses, are subject to revision. https://dechenfoundationbooks.wordpress.com/2017/06/14/telescope-of-faith/ More and more though science is being tre...
