Re: Soka Gakai (SGI) Criticism Thread

One point that often gets missed in these SGI discussions, is that each national SGI organisation has a lot of independent freedom. There isn't really such an entity as 'SGI'. I am in the UK and recently made contact with SGI-UK to find out about meetings in my area. I was put in touch with a Distri...

Re: Wow - this really works

Thank you very much for the kind comments, Rory, and I intend to make contact with that London Nichiren-Shu Temple. Perhaps I will visit it this year too.

Wow - this really works

I first learned to meditate (FWBO Centre) 16 years ago. And for 16 years I had tried to find comfort, growth, peace and stillness from various meditation practices... and I have failed. I know they work for some. I really acknowledge that. But for me, I found no peace in any meditation practices. I ...

Re: Jodo Shu vs Jodo Shinshu vs Jishu vs Yuzu Nembetsu Shu?

I'm part of the Amida sect (based in the UK) and our practice is much closer to Jodo-Shu than the other 3 schools. We actively recite the Nembutsu, but also engage in Nei Quan and Chih Quan as auxiliary practices. If you're not aware of these practices, (anyone) google them; they are beautiful pract...

Re: Jodo Shinshu and personal morality

Northern Light, thank you for the encouraging words :) It does occur to me that if gratitude is Shin's primary mode, then truly grateful people would naturally tend not to act hatefully and would tend to curb their worst impulses ... Gassho, Steve That's exactly how I see it Steve. Anyone who sees ...

Re: New member

A very warm welcome to you, StandBright!

It can be isolating when you are mainly practicing and studying alone. I am in the same situation but we are luckly to have some engagement with a Sangha (I attend a weekly meditation group too).

It's great to have you here.

This is SO true. Of all aspects of Buddhism. On these forums we intellectualize it so much.

Very well said, and very wise.

Re: Doubts about Pure land

Hello, I've joined this forum in order to express some doubts that I have. I've read the story about Dharmakara before he became Amitabha Buddha. My question is how really likely is it for some ordinary human to be able to go through five aeons (that's five big bangs) of nothing but sheer practice ...

Re: Namo Amitabha Buddha, True and False

Amida, Shakyamuni, Theravada, Mahayana, Suttas, Sutras ...... ........ the only person who can categorically state as fact that they know what is true and what is not, is the man who is standing beside Siddharta Gautama (and I don't mean in metaphor!). So as that is none of us, choose your faith; (a...

Re: Jodo Shinshu and personal morality

Shin teaches that Amida accepts us "just as we are" and saves and enlightens us regardless of our actions. This brings in the question of ethical action, "Buddhistic" action, in the world. If, because of Amida's guarantee of salvation, we are free to do anything, Shinjin could b...

Re: Jodo Shinshu vs. Theravada

I'd love to hear Buddhist chanting in English (my mother tongue) better yet, do some Buddhist chanting in English & I fully agree. Hearing it in other languages for me, while quite rhythmical & melodious is really not much different than what the Catholic Church used to do with Latin. Teach...

Hello from the Geordie Buddhist (Newcastle UK)

Hello there, Just arrived here so thought I'd say hello. 'Northern Lights' is the name. I mainly practice Pure Land (Amida UK) Buddhism, but I also attend a weekly Dhammakaya Meditation Class at a Wat Phra Temple / Meditation Centre, run by a fantastic Thai Monk. (It's Theravadan Samatha Meditation,...
