I've used PechaMaker (http://www.pechamaker.com/) and that's worked just fine for me.

Re: Neti Pots and you

I used to be fairly enthusiastic about doing it, but now 'm in the "only when needed" camp as well mainly for those OMG I'M SO PLUGGED UP moments, I'm not convinced of the efficacy / safety / need for doing it daily.

Re: Neti Pots and you

What Malcolm said. I dropped and broke my first Neti Pot and now use a large syringe like thing with a tip called a Nasaline to do the same thing but with more control. Are you inverting / properly draining out your sinuses as well? You don't want to leave any fluid in there.

Re: Chakrasamvara initiation fundraiser...

nobody gives HYTs here in Malaysia. the closest that we get is Guru Rinpoche. Yamantaka, Hevajra, Guhyasamaja etc are out of reach. The Lamas usually prefer to give Dzambala or Kurukulle for the Kagyus/Gelugs/Sakyas and certain Nyima Lamas may give more obscure yidams, but nothing serious. Erm, His...

A good introduction to the Sakya school can be found in the book "Treasures of the Sakya Lineage."

The Shambhala Center you linked to in Durham....looks a little shady. (But it's Durham, so I'm not surprised. *rimshot*) Can you vouch for them? They don't say what lineage they're affiliated with. Shambala Centers are far from shady. They discuss their lineage right here: http://durham.shambhala.o...

Re: Help me out here - I've got some big gaps in my knowledg

That's good news. Just one caveat to keep in mind: Enlightenment is not a race. In my experience, all too often, newcomers to Tibetan Buddhism find a local Dharma center and immediately dive into the deep end and try to take everything in, enthusiastically volunteer, and attend every class and avail...

There is so much very easily acquired, openly available published material on the Kalachakra initiation and practice (even at the local bookstore). What exactly are you wanting to learn more about?

While the book linked above is quite good, and I would recommend it, it very specifically states at the beginning of chapter 2 that one needs a qualified teacher to actually do the meditation practice within it.

Re: Jon Kabat-Zinn: authorization to teach?

Kabat-Zinn famously teaches insight meditation style mindfulness meditation, and has for many moons, starting in the clinical environment. It's also often mentioned that he was a student of Seung Sahn Sunim. He's stated that he basically presents meditation in the style of Kornfield and Goldstein, ...

Re: First time questions

According to one of my teachers (I adhere to Tibetan Buddhism), it's fine for me to chant my practices in Tibetan, but only if I understand pretty well what it is I'm chanting and it isn't necessarily better to do so.

Welcome, and sorry to read about your family's loss. My first real world exposure to Buddhism was at a grandparent's funeral, meeting the very kind nuns who reside and practice at a beautiful temple in Taiwan where my grandparents are both interred. After being exposed to the funeral rites and visit...

Just because you take refuge and/or dip your toe into group practices at a particular Tibetan Buddhist center doesn't mean you're making some sort of commitment. You should look around and examine those centers carefully. Once you start taking any sort of commitments or pursuing a relationship with ...

One of the lamas at Sakya Monastery in Seattle is offering a Saraswati Initiation in a few weeks. There's some information from the description: Saraswati (Yangchenma) is a goddess of both Buddhism and Hinduism. She is the goddess of poetry, the arts, music, and of learning. Many Tibetan Buddhist sc...

You're not going to find an authoritative answer to this online or in books. You really should ask your teacher.
