Re: Are there many former Catholics/Christians here?
It's a bit late to help the OP, but Paul F. Knitter's Without Buddha I Could Not Be a Christian might appeal. It's a foundational account of the postmodern phenomenon of double-belonging. And of course there are the Bernadette Roberts books -- Experience of No-Self , Path to No-Self , and What Is Se...

Re: Forum software is responding slowly
Since the forum is just phpBB, it should be possible to search for people also having slow responses when posting to a phpBB forum. For example, my search came up with this as the first result: https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=466&t=2374061 That thread suggests that changing the &...

Re: Mahamudra- or Dzogchen-teachers available at skype?
A couple of the pragmatic dharma teachers offer coaching via Skype, but I don't know of any Dzogchen teachers who do the same thing. Have you got any replies back from the ones you asked?

Re: Tough times for religious studies
Although there had been academic study of comparative religion on a small scale for a long time, the field of Religious Studies really took off during the economic boom that followed WWII, and in particular during the vast expansion of higher education that took place during the 1960s. It makes sens...

Re: (carefully) Broadcasting Dzogchen through music
Hi, MRC, At the head of chapter two of The Crystal and the Way of Light , there are two rules attributed to Garab Dorje: Rule #1. If you give an explanation of Dzogchen to a hundred people who are interested, this is not enough. Rule #2. If you give an explanation to one person who is not interested...

It's been a while (like, a really, really long while) since I studied Sanskrit, but that yaḥ . . . taṃ is the way you form a relative clause in Sanskrit. I bow down to him (taṃ) who (yaḥ) etc.

It provides additional evidence of the intermingling of Saivism and Buddhism at that time. It seems that John Reynolds has become less of a traditionalist since he translated The Golden Letters . In an article on Kashmir Shaivism and Dzogchen , he writes: "Kashmiri Shaivism, as a distinct movem...

the Manjusriyamulakalpa states that Saiva, Garuda and Vaisnava mantras were all taught originally by Manjushri. It's just more evidence that "Tantric Śaivism and Tantric Buddhism borrowed freely from one another, creating marked parallelisms primarily in practice, and sometimes in thought as w...

The the Guhyasiddhi of Padmavajra, a work associated with the Guhyasamaja tradition, prescribes acting as a Saiva guru and initiating members into Saiva Siddhanta scriptures and mandalas. He talks about Saiva-Buddhist intertextuality and makes the case that "Buddhists would have had the famili...

He also interestingly does not rule out a correspondence with Kashmir Shaivism. FWIW I recently heard Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche, whose Deer Park Institute regularly holds courses and seminars on Kashmir Shaivism, say that it is "very, very identical" with Vajrayana Buddhism I've been rea...
