Without bodhicitta the liberation of a Shravakayana Arhat is possible.
But that entails a whole lot of renunciation—and many lifetimes.

Anybody can chant it. There’s no dietary requirements.
However if you’re going to invest a lot of time and emery in it, you might want to take an imitation into the practice of Chenrezig.

Re: Gelug responses to these critiques of Tsongkhapa?
When I’m trying to hammer two pieces of wood together, and I hammer my thumb by mistake, Tsongkhapa’s position seems more valid.
However when I’m doing Vajrayana practice, his view seems like a boat anchor to samsara.

Re: Jamyang Khyentse Chökyi Lodrö on Dolpopa
When used by Dolpopa and Dudjom R, “Great Madhyamaka” is a synonym for Shentong. In fact I believe most Nyingmapas use it that way.…if one equates shentong with Great Madhyamaka as discussed by Dudjom Rinpoche…

“Effulgent displays”. I like that. Works with the “illusory nature” narrative too. From the ultimate view, ignorance/samsara is just the effulgent display of that nature.

You’re not alone here in that. There are other people here that have the same approach.
I am not a Buddhist, but I seek enlightenment thru Buddhist teachings.

That’s like asking how blind people poop.
Better to ask how they find their toothbrush and cleaning supplies

Re: after enlightenment
The analogy I’ve heard is that the Dharma is like a boat you use to cross a body of water. Once you make it to “the other shore” you get out of the boat.

Re: another question about rebirth
They are related and have overlaps for sure, but I think it could clarify the intersection between Buddhist assumptions of self and modern ones. The buddhist point being that you’re current identity, your emotional, intellectual, interpersonal life isn’t your essential nature. Everything you’ve eve...

Re: another question about rebirth
As I’ve said elsewhere, I like the analogy of a caterpillar metamorphosing into a butterfly. The caterpillar identified itself as a multi legged crawling insect that ate leaves. The butterfly no longer identifies as such. The “self” the caterpillar identified as its essence was not in fact its esse...

Re: Accidental stumble into hell.
All substance abuse scenarios include exaggerated fear. However the different substances provoke different forms of fear. I have done iboga three times before and it ended up with only positive results. It allows you to see your traumas and dissolve them. But in principle I agree that the heightene...

Re: another question about rebirth
From where I sit, it seems to me that for you continuity suffices for a self. It seems to me that continuity per se isn’t a self, but implies a self. The dictionary defines continuity as “the unbroken and consistent existence or operation of something over a period of time”. How do you understand c...

Re: another question about rebirth
From where I sit, it seems to me that for you continuity suffices for a self. I agree, that’s the error. Continuity does not imply self. I think perhaps the gap for you is what you understand by the word self. For me, accepting that consciousness is always changing and doesn't retain identity even ...

Re: Opinions on Roger Jackson's "Rebirth"?
So whilst discarding rebirth certainly waters down the buddhadharma, it does not render the Buddha's solutions immediately irrelevant and moot, since he has plenty of answers to the question of dukkha that does not rely on the end of rebirth. Since The 1st Noble Truth insists that everything in lif...

Re: another question about rebirth
I’m not well studied on the ālāyavijñāna, but if it continues from life to life, is it a subtle self? If you want to call it that, yes. The Pali based practitioners saw it as such, and therefore called it a heresy. I wasn't asserting; I was asking how you understand the ālāyavijñāna. I see it like ...

Re: another question about rebirth
Thank you for helping me better understand how you understand rebirth. And if I understand you correctly, you hold that karma is the continuity between lifetimes. As was mentioned earlier, in Mahayana doctrine that which goes from one life to another is the alaya vujnana, the “all-base consciousnes...
