Re: I just want to hear your opinion. No offenses please,

I am sad to see that some people prefer cheap insults rather than debate... There was nothing offensive in this verse from the Srimad Bhagavatam, which has 5000 years old at least, and was not invented by Srila Prabhupada... I am in favor of pluralism but all I see is hatred between cultivators of ...

Re: I just want to hear your opinion. No offenses please,

I've met a few theists who are truly bewildered, even threatened, by the reality of a world religion which denies a creator God. Other than that, I'd say that quotes like those cited in the OP highlight how often people use the cloak of religion to voice whatever they find convenient or clever. Rid...

Re: I just want to hear your opinion. No offenses please,

[/quote] Buddha Shakyamuni indeed talked about the so-called supreme deity/creator god in a Pali sutta and explained that this god was simply the first to be reborn in his particular pure realm and just assumed he was an all-powerful creator. Ad then of course Madhyamaka teachings, which simply clar...

Re: I just want to hear your opinion. No offenses please,

In the late 19th century a Russian journalist wrote a book about Jesus having traveled to India to learn Buddha's Dharma. Nobody that checked his "sources" found evidence of any such thing. Yet the idea persists even to this day. That doesn't make it true. :focus: Read the Bavishya Maha P...

Re: I just want to hear your opinion. No offenses please,

If you are a follower of Vishnu, worshipping Buddha as an avatar of Vishnu, then the abovementioned quotes are 100% true (within the specific religious framework). If you are a Buddhist, then realistically, the abovementioned quotes shouldn't concern you in the least. They are basically irrelevant ...

I just want to hear your opinion. No offenses please,

I just want to hear serious, non-insultuous, opinions about this verse from the Srimad Bhagavatam. Atheists do not want any God, and Lord Buddha therefore said that there is no God, but he adopted the means to instruct his followers for their benefit. Therefore he preached in a duplicitous way, say...

Re: Hindu Deities in the Shurangama Mantra.

Well, Gautama Buddha was born in 500 BC, while the B. Gita was transcripted in 3000 BC. This is facts. I hate to burst your bubble but perhaps you may know that it's open knowledge that Indian texts have a tendency to inflate time periods? Have you considered that the 'facts' could have been a popu...

Re: Hindu Deities in the Shurangama Mantra.

Bhagavad Gita was written as a response to Buddhism and Buddha. Krishna did not exist yet during Buddha's time. Most of the Tantras show Buddhist gods trampling over Hindu gods. Many of the Hindu gods of popularity today were once exclusively Buddhist gods. Well, Gautama Buddha was born in 500 BC, ...

Re: Hindu Deities in the Shurangama Mantra.

Buddhists are non-theists, hence do not 'worship' nor take refuge in worldly deities but merely accord the usual respect as Ven Indrajala mentioned to them like how you would accord respect to your family elders and those worthy of respect and that is what the Shurangama Dharani does in the case of...

Re: Hindu Deities in the Shurangama Mantra.

Indra is one of the protectors of the cosmos. He heads the four Mahārājas, who guard the four directions. Brahma likewise is friendly to Buddhism. The gods should be respected and honoured. They are not specifically Hindu. Indra for example is Zeus and Thor (common Indo-European heritage). Is not Z...

Hindu Deities in the Shurangama Mantra.

Namaste!
My obeisances to all,

I am curious about the fact that in the Shurangama Mantra,
there is (2 or 3 times) a worship to Indra, Rudra, Brahma and Narayana
that are some of the main Hindu Deities...
Any thought?

Thank you in advance,
John

Re: Purification of karma

It's a secret Greg... You are not ready. :meditate: So secret that you plaster it in an open discussion on a public internet board? Are you sure you didn't mean that you are not ready or capable of explaining it, because I reckon I am ready enough to able to hear what you have to say? I didn't reve...

Re: Purification of karma

Purification of karma by just seeing something, that is an incongruous with the Buddha's other teachings. Must be a teaching to be interpreted or simply a bogus sutra. When I was young, decades ago, I used to plaster mantras and special symbols, including the later of those, all over my apartments ...

Re: Purification of karma

Namaste, In my humble opinion, all means of purification of karma are the manifestations of the mercy without cause of the Supreme. So, they gradually nullify the reactions of our actions, purify our senses (gross and subtle) and allow us to reach higher platforms of realization. All in one. Your s...

Grand Sextile

Namaste, Does anyone know if the Grand Sextile of July 29, 2013 has some importance in the Buddhist tradition? In astrological terms, a grand sextile is an extremely rare, six-pointed star, or hexagram, that forms in the heavens when six planets align, each approximately sixty degrees apart. Yours ...

The first time I saw a picture of Venerable Master Hsuan Hua,
I become strangely attracted.
But after I read His teachings, I became very fond of Him.
All glories to Venerable Master Hsuan Hua!

Gambling / Precepts

Namaste,
Gambling or luck games are against buddhist precepts?
(I am inclined to believe that they are, but I'd like to hear your opinion)
gratefully yours,
John
