Re: Fears mount over scale of Buddhist sect sexual abuse

There is a natural order of things. 1. You're born 2. You grow 3. You reproduce 4. You get old 5. You die. 1. is not guaranteed, some (many) die before they are born. 2. is not guaranteed, many die while being born, or as soon as they are born, or soon after, or... 3. many (quite a lot in the first...

Is this thread (really) going to be derailed turn into yet another (supremely boring) "Dzogchen is the best, forget about the rest" rant?

I would say "Dharma is fit for all cultures", Buddhism tends to be culturally specific in most cases.

Re: Garchen rinpoche Yamantaka Empowerment Livestream

The best advice is your Lama's. Do not take as true anything others say, good or bad: Do not regard it with hope or fear; do not affirm or deny it. Allow others to say whatever they like, as if they are talking about a corpse. Except for a qualified Lama, no one can give correct advice, not even yo...

Re: Indigenizing Dharma

This is totally my own two cents, but... rather than worry about "indigenizing Buddhism" in the West, I recommend Western practitioners apply ourselves to the practice of the Dharma and achieve Realization. Then the ensuing Enlightened activity ( thrin-lay ) that spontaneously manifests w...

Re: Fears mount over scale of Buddhist sect sexual abuse

This is just a thought. I've noticed with sex abuse cases involving organised religions, predominantly Buddhist and Catholic but I can also remember one here in Australia that involved the Hindu religion. That sects that demand celibacy from their ordained members seem to be involved in these types...

Don't feel too happy, because this internal purge may be used as a springboard for a generalized attack on the Queer community. No, I am not saying "all gay men are pedophiles" but others will (and have in the past).

Re: This is the discourse on mundane pleasure - Drukpa Kunley Rinpoche

Given that I don't read Tibetan and have to rely on translations, the only English language book I have come across is Dowman's "The Divine Madman - The Sublime Life and Songs of Drukpa Kunley". I don't know how bad the translations are since I cannot read the original. Personally, I like ...

It's there. Oh, it is too. In the footnotes. I didn't read the footnotes. I went on to read the article about Matthew though, including his psychologists report: "In my opinion Matthew's three-year residence in the FWBO had extremely harmful psychological effects upon him ... I have no doubt t...

Re: Fears mount over scale of Buddhist sect sexual abuse

To put things "in perspective" you would have to be well informed - your postings in this thread does not reflect that at all. The perspective is the extent of the problem (and yes, I consider it a problem) in comparison to the extent, and nature of the issue, that exists in the Catholic ...

Re: Fears mount over scale of Buddhist sect sexual abuse

Yes, senior order members were encouraged to have sexual relations with junior members. This is one reason this organization is so off. You had one predator at the top encouraging his underlings to emulate his predatory behavior. I said "mainly" one person. Do we know the real extent of t...

Been there, done that... Again? I can't help but wonder Greg, if you'd have the same "no big deal " attitude if the story involved Catholic priests rather than Buddhist monks. The abuse may have happened many years ago but I still feel that the perpetrator should face justice. I d...
