Re: Wrathful "Mahakala" with Phurba and Kapala?

though I wish there were some more specific info, at least I can gather that it's a form of Mahakala, indeed, from the Nyingma traditions. That's a great start, and may be enough...... If you have access to a sufficient selection of Palyul thangkas, you could compare the lineage figures above the f...

Re: A specific historical claim about the Soto tradition

Thanks for that, i read Hoffman's book in the mid 70's and i was not impressed at the time, actually i thought it was a silly book. It was and is a silly book, published simply as a money-maker for another bandwagon-jumping profiteer. I am under the impression that some people (not his serious stud...

Re: Was karmamudra part of ganachakra in the ancient India?

If someone is practicing vajrayana without utilizing the poisons then can they really be said to be practicing? This question is truly to the point. One could just become very good at a sadhana and know all the fine points, but if the poisons are not brought to the path, how is this not just ritual...

Re: Was karmamudra part of ganachakra in the ancient India?

ngaging in karmamudra practice demands some qualifications, as well as outer, inner, and secret signs applying to body, speech, and mind. These specificities are discussed in special works known as “pho-khrid”, i.e., Guidance for Males, and “mo-khrid”, i.e., Guidance for Females. These descriptions...

Re: Is Nyingma much more spread than Sarma (in Europe)?

I wish I knew about sarma schools and approach more. I will need to do something about that. Or, unless you find the Nyingmapa lacking for some reason, you could just continue your efforts there. If you have already been practicing 15 or 20 years, that's a pretty good piece of your life, an...

Re: Is Nyingma much more spread than Sarma (in Europe)?

The Nyingmapas do seem to be more open to granting profound empowerments to people in the West than the Sarma schools. I am not sure this was the case in Tibet, however. One reason might be that a common Nyingmapa approach is to grant a profound practice at the beginning of a student's career, and l...

Someone with all the empowerments, transmissions and instructions of a lineage? Drikung Kagyu and ChNN. Someone with a major tantra and/or terma empowerments, transmissions and instructions? Palyul Nyingma, Northern Treasures and Dudjom Tersar. All these with the retreat time required as well. To b...

Re: Was karmamudra part of ganachakra in the ancient India?

Buddhist tantra predates Shaiva movement by a lot. Mahāvairocana Tantra is 674 CE. The Kashmiri sect of tantric shaivism comes long after that, and besides, it's basically Vedanta. You are confusing chronologies, and issues. First of all, to get that out of the way, the Mahavairocana tantra does no...

Re: Was karmamudra part of ganachakra in the ancient India?

Vajrayana was always meant for the ordained. Not saying exclusively, do try to contain your disdain.. It is a good thing you back-pedaled on this a bit. The Vajrayana scriptures (such as the Cakrasamvara stuff) which deal with the things under discussion here are clearly dependent in structure at l...

Re: Was karmamudra part of ganachakra in the ancient India?

Although these rituals were several centuries older, and come from the mysterious Kula tradition, we do have texts describing the Śaiva ganachakra sexual ritual in the form of Chapter 29 of Abhinavagupta's Tantrāloka which was written in the early 11th century, so roughly contemporaneously with the...

Re: Was karmamudra part of ganachakra in the ancient India?

First of all, one should never judge what might have gone on in medieval India by what you read in modern Tibetan tsok texts.Too many pitfalls. If you want to look at this particular question from the standpoint of what modern well-informed scholars like Sanderson, Davidson, and Gray are thinking, t...

Re: Do you get rid of suffering for good with Dzogchen ?

:good:

This is the point of all Mahayana Buddhism, and I find it a bit strange that someone would come to the Dzogchen teachings before he or she had even nodding acquaintance with Buddhism in general. I guess it's because Dzogchen is trendy and the people who are marketing it are very skillful.

I can remember many times in my life that I thought practice was going along just fine, until I went back to a teacher and he showed me very directly that I was wrong.

Re: Unknown Tibetan character

These sorts of non-standard characters are intended to be representations of foreign languages, usually Sanskrit, in cases where there is no Tibetan counterpart to the required sound/letter combination. There are some more usual constructions, but none is really "correct".

Re: Stagnant sanghas, teachers not teaching

The role of the Teacher is not just to transmit texts and comment on them. For that, YouTube, Zoom, etc. may be acceptable. However, IME, it's important to be with the Teacher as much as possible (as long as you don't get burnt in the process). As the Teacher really gets to know you, He or She can ...

Re: Stagnant sanghas, teachers not teaching

ften, that's what being rime really boils down to -- being Kagyud or Sakypa but practicing Nyingma. :jumping: there are plenty of masters who are/were like Togden Rinpoche, who was Drikung technically, but actually full on Nyingma by practice. This is actually true. And IMO there is nothing wrong w...
