Re: Question of Questions of King Milinda

How is it incorrect to say that the chariot is simply a collection of constituents? Or, if I were so lucky as to be Milinda, how would Nagasena have countered my assertion that, yes, the chariot is all of its parts together? the easy answer is that the quality chariot which is seen in the collectio...

Re: Death at Tibetan Buddhist meditation retreat in Arizona

I do sometimes wonder if DM is so far gone as to be a (dangerous) cult, and what it'd be like if it was in 'communion' with mainstream Buddhism. easily one of the top 3 sanghas in the US then again most centers are very low quality, so thats not hard much of the sangha is international ie. they fle...

Re: Reaching the unconscious mind

How can the mind can look beyond itself? Isn't that an oxymoron? Isn't everything mind? its not beyonmd it, its more along the lines of, when you quell disturbing mental factors the mind becomes more peaceful, and therefore more clear, which in turns allows you to discriminate subtler characteristics

Re: Essentialism Against Impermanence

An Aristotelian can attempt to rebut the idea of impermanent identity by positing an essence. If a Buddhist argues, as one might, that, say, I am not ultimately the same person even if a single hair falls out of my head (since it is a contradiction to say the person with N hairs is identical to the...

Re: Reaching the unconscious mind

Yet the activities of the unconscious mind are, by definition, unavailable.... Not "by definition". The "unconscious" is simply that of which one is not aware. One could be aware of it in the future; or one may have been aware of it in the past. /thread the unconscious mind is s...

Re: Non-celibacy

That is my understanding as well. But it raises the practical question: if one does not wish for this result, should one meditate at all? That is, suppose one wants to retain an ability to engage and be interested in the desire realm. then just reach perfect samadhi of the desire realm it will make...

Re: Mahamudra meditation problem: locating the mind

Which ever path we follow the direct experience of the mind or cognition is the same. What is uncovered is the same. It is only when our beliefs get in the way (path beliefs) that there is a problem. We don't trust our direct experience. We think we need to adopt a belief system to chase mind out o...

having sex wont prevent your from reaching samadhi or shamata its just that as you progress sex will seem coarser and coarser in comparison to your mind in concentration. at a certain threshold you will be spending more time enjoying a concentrated mind than time spent enjoying or thinking about sex...

Re: Taktsang & Dharmakirti

As a general observation on your question, the notion of 'ultimate phenomena' is self-contradictory, because 'phenomena' by definition are 'that which is to be explained'. its not contradictory according to their usage of ultimate and conventional/deceptive this is explained thoroughly in the good ...

Re: Mahamudra meditation problem: locating the mind

the function of the mind is not a concept if you drop all concepts, hammers can still hit nails, youll still not be able to cut a qualia in half, and mind will continue functioning as a momentary object. What point are you making here? I don't quite understand what you are trying to say. youre tryi...

Re: Mahamudra meditation problem: locating the mind

Again you are imagining mind as a thing which contains representations. A thing which is non-locatable. If it is non-locatable why do you give it so much importance? Why see it as a source? the function of the mind is not a concept if you drop all concepts, hammers can still hit nails, youll still ...

gelug and nongelug are both buddhists so they both accept the general presentation on how mental images/concepts come about from dignaga/dharmakirti. what they disagree about is particular very subtle points that in the end have big implications

Returning momentarily to my prior inquiry, while keeping your explanation in account, does this imply that Tsongkhapa's formulation of the two truths were a means to an end, an opposition to a normative he felt needed to be remedied? It does seem Tsongkhapa had concerns about a declining lack of em...

1. I see a beautiful sunset. I see that it persists from moment to moment *and* is impermanent; i.e. its moments are numbered. Persisting from moment to moment does not mean permanence. 2. It is the knowledge of impermanence, not permanence, that makes me grasp/cling: The beautiful sunset is going ...

The Tibetan traditions seem a million miles away from the Theravadins who I understand are considered to be the closest to what the Buddha actually taught himself prior to any major interpretations. There were no Vajras, Bells, Inner Offerings....etc... in the Discourses  tibetan buddhism (w...

Re: Uncommon Mahayana Approaches to Dealing With Desire

Selflessness only implies a recognition that appearances are empty, including any appearance of a truly existing self. It does not suggest the subsequent mental projection upon phenomena that they are pure manifestations of the deitys body, speech and mind which is pure vision. In that state furthe...

Re: Uncommon Mahayana Approaches to Dealing With Desire

There is no transformation into purity in sūtra, none at all. i mentioned one: post equipoise of selflessness (let alone emptiness), one's suffering identity automatically dissolves and one which is free from suffering arises. This is not transformation of the samsaric vision into purity. Resting i...
