Re: Engaged artists
what would you call "engaged buddhist principles" and how would you see them as being the motivational factor behind the art? For example, compassion. In an 'engaged form' could that (for you) take the form of a film or photo documentation of the plight of the downtrodden, does that fit yo...

Re: Short Bodhisattva Vow
The recitation of the vow 6x day is this something that any good practicioner will make sure they do? Or is it something that perhaps one may decide to do only on occasion? Mudra, I am unsure if what you meant by requirement for HYT is six session guru yoga or if you were referring to the actual re...

Re: Short Bodhisattva Vow
Thank you. Just some additional questions: Do most practioners recite these prayers 6x daily like suggested in the teachings? I have taken the bodhisattva vow in a formal ceremony but have just been reciting Atisha's prayer (thinking that that was the short vow prayer). Good thing I asked as I woul...

Re: Bodhicitta in the Lam Rim Chen Mo
In fact, within the Gelug system as derived from Jowo Atisha's presentation, often the generation of Bodhicitta is presented in three stages: 1. simple aspiration (no commitment but just a fervent wish) 2. aspiration with promise (12 precepts) 3. engaging vow (18 major downfalls, 46 secondary ones, ...

Re: Short Bodhisattva Vow
Okay, so the prayer... "I take refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha By the merit I create by the practice of generosity And other far reaching perfections May I attain Buddhahood in order to benefit all beings" is not considered the short bodhisattva vow prayer? That's Atisha's Mahaya...

Rulu's latest translation, which is from the Bodhisattva-bhumi of Maitreya: http://www.sutrasmantras.info/sutra31.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; That would be Asanga, actually. Not in the Chinese tradition; they consider Maitreya the source/dictator/inspiration. See R...

Re: Propelling and Completing Karma
I'm not sure if I understand correctly but does the projecting karma also project the length of the existence? I.e, the karma that projected the re-birth in the human realm is also going to project that the existce will be say for 90 years? If so, then the analogy of the outline of a painting (proj...

Re: Propelling and Completing Karma
Strictly speaking karma (again within this tradition, I am not knowledgeable enough about the Pali tradition) refers to the intention at the time of/that motivates the action. Hmmm, on the Berzin archives karma is listed as the equivalent of a mental urge (sems-pa) or (yid-kyi las) as a type of eve...

Re: Propelling and Completing Karma
From where did you derive the terms "Propelling" and "Completing Karma"? I think it is much easier to disambiguate if one speaks in terms of karma and the fruit of karma (vipākaphala). It seems to me that people often use "karma" when they mean vipākaphala and it cause...

Re: Propelling and Completing Karma
I think the whole point of Mahayana is to understand Sunyata, and not worry about all this other crap. I think the point is that the explanations given in the sutra seem to cause much worry among people who upon hearing that explanation of karma focus on the past and possible future and can get bog...

Re: Propelling and Completing Karma
Yes Shunyata and Dependent Arising. Not karma, rebirth, 6 perfections etc. Karma, rebirth, 6 perfections etc are part and parcel of dependent arising. As Huifeng pithily points out: In discarding "this other crap", one cannot understand sunyata. The only "crap" left would be wro...

Re: Propelling and Completing Karma
I think the whole point of Mahayana is to understand Sunyata, and not worry about all this other crap. To understand shunyata , you also have understand and acknowledge 'all this other crap'. Arya Nagarjuna was very clear about that - shunyata and dependent arising being two sides of the same coin ...

Re: Four Binding factors?
In the Bodhisattva vow within the Tibetan tradition, these four binding factors refer to how you completely break the Bodhisattva vow when you perform any of 16 major transgressions out of 18. To be clear, if when you transgress these 16, you have all these four binding factors, then it is a major t...

Re: Causes for afflictions to arise
As Bodhisattvas we want to attain enlightenment quickly for the benefit of all sentient beings. It is my personal opinion, that the more one understands about the mind, the senses, and so on, the more it benefits ones practice of tantra. I may be wrong though. Kevin As I am not a bodhisattva, I can...

Re: Causes for afflictions to arise
Ok. This hair has been split finely enough. I'm not splitting hairs, Mudra. These teachings are very important. The distinctions are important if we want to understand mind. There are afflictions for certain reasons, but afflictions only arise when these three things are present. For example, anger...

Re: three doors to liberation
In commentaries on the Heart Sutra that I received there is also reference to these three doors.
However I don't recall there being reference to Yogacara specifically, in fact it was presented more from a Madyamaka pov overall. Interesting, thanks.

Re: Causes for afflictions to arise
Hi Mudra. Afflcitions don't arise directly because of negative social context (bad and foolish friends), or because of mistaken explanations/teachings. Those are indirect causes. Why is this the case? Because someone with no afflictions (lacking latent proclivity) who is in the company of bad and f...

Re: Causes for afflictions to arise
Actually Vasubandhu condensed these three from six that his half brother, Arya Asangha, presented in his Bodhisattva Bhumis: 1. latent proclivity 2. appearance of objects conducive to arousal of kleshas 3. negative social context (bad and foolish friends) 4. mistaken explanations/teachings 5. habit...
