"Devotion is the seat of meditation."
One can attain Mahamudra through Vajrasattva Practice in your Ngondro or any Yidam, including empowerments you may already hold, such as Chenrezig. This has been my experience.
Practice on!

Empowerments outside the Lineage
What are the various positions of taking and practicing empowerments outside the Karma Kagyu lineage? I realize teachers hold multiple lineages and am not really interested in the teacher angle. I am more interested in the student angle. Is it wise? Problematic? Harmful? Confusing to practice one Yi...

Re: Where to go in San Francisco for "Pointing Out" instr?
Catlady, Your best bet is to locate a time when Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche from KTD Woodstock will be in the San Francisco area or in California for his current teachings on Khenpo Gangshar's Mahumudra. Here is the KTD link to centers in California: http://www.kagyu.org/kagyulineage/centers/usa/index.p...

Re: Esoteric/Mystical, non-Vajrayana Buddhist schools?
I once upon a time was Tibetan, but no longer identify as such. I'd like to know more information, too. I practice Tibetan Buddhism. I certainly am an open-minded person and do not mind articulated reasons. In my geographical area, there are many who have given up on Tibetan Buddhism. They have had...

Re: Karma Kagyu versus Diamond way
I have no idea where you live, so I cannot provide clear input. However, I would not choose a lineage based on geographical location. I'd choose one based on the teacher. I live in the United States; therefore, I chose a solid, established, credible, outstanding vajra master, Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche...

Re: Merit Giving?
I was wondering if ya'll think it is possible to give merit to other beings by doing practices for them? This is concerning my family. My mom classifies herself as an Anglican, my dad is agnostic (but doesn't show much interest in religion), my brother is a Gnostic (so I'm not worried about him), a...

Re: Doubts about Pure land
Doesn't address Pure Land specifically, but if you undress all the various mythologies and just look at some basic questions it will clarify what you do and don't believe: 1) Do you believe your mindstream continues in some form 2) Do you believe your mindstream is what it is due to causes and cond...

Re: On the difficulty of recognizing the natural state
Tulku Pema Rigtsal reminds me, “Such yogis and yoginis make no distinction between high and low views, nor do they pay heed to the speed of accomplishment on the path.”

Re: Newbie Vajrayana Buddhist
Hi, all. I just found this great forum by accident--a good accident! I have practiced Mahayana Buddhism for nearly ten years and have taken refuge in the Vajrayana path last October 2011. I am very excited to learn from this forum. May all beings in the present and future benefit from this forum's ...

Re: 3rd karmapa's aspiration of mahamudra prayer
Have you received the reading transmission (lung) for this prayer? What does or doesn't need a transmission (lung)? There are so many translated books, so many prayers, and so many newly written works. What makes a "prayer" significant or not significant for a lung? I read Calling the Gur...

Re: Ngondro Reading Transmission Needed
I contacted Lama Kathy. She is indeed coming to Wichita, KS--a place I have been for teachings before. I requested permission to receive a reading transmission of the Ngondro. Problem Solved. I am following my teacher's advice. I am excited to meet for the first time a great American female lama tra...

Re: Ngondro Reading Transmission Needed
Thanks, all, for the replies. I will contact KTD to locate retreat lamas in the area. And, if Lama Kathy visits Wichita, I will go there, of course. I am also practicing the ngondro and am not discouraged. KTD Monastery in Woodstock, NY doesn't allow reading transmissions over the phone. Also, until...

Ngondro Reading Transmission Needed
I live in the Oklahoma area and need a reading transmission of the common Ngondro offered at KTD Monastery. I have the teaching aspect of the practice from my teacher, whom I contact via phone. Many lamas focus on their own terrain, so to speak, and I understand that. But, for those who live in the ...
