Re: A Physicalist Theory of Mind
My point was that for mundane purposes, one hermeneutic is just as good as another. if one insists on a mundane view, as I think shel seems to, then either of these mundane views (that of the elements in a vulgar sense or the periodic chart you learned in the 7th grade) may be acceptable. My questi...

Re: A Physicalist Theory of Mind
the Buddhist paradigm is not a materialist paradigm, the qualitative properties of the five elements are their key points, not their physical existence per se. Earth is not dirt, air is not a breeze, etc... So what element is dirt if not earth, according to the five element model? You don't underst...

Derived from... never mind.Malcolm wrote:shel wrote: There, that wasn't so hard to admit.
Sure, but that is not the point of discussion. A concept of a unicorn is not rūpa. It is nāma, i.e. non-material.

Re: A Physicalist Theory of Mind
You don't know that they're imaginary. Most likely they are imaginary, but my point is that a unicorn would never have been imagined in the first place had the building blocks (horse and horn) never existed. THUS, unicorns were derived from a horse (physical) and a horn (also physical). What else c...

Re: A Physicalist Theory of Mind
there's no mind-object duality regarding a dualism. put a horn on a horse and you have a horse in a unicorn costume. that's not a unicorn, no matter what they told you at the store. I hope you kept the receipt because unicorns are imaginary. they are only conceptual, only mindstuff. You don't know ...

Re: A Physicalist Theory of Mind
Not sure how but you're missing the point... No, you are missing the point — someone claimed there is such a thing as non-physical rūpa. That claim is mistaken. Rather, this is the mistaken claim: ... that [a unicorn] is nāma because it is conceptual, vikalpa. It is not something derived from the f...

Re: A Physicalist Theory of Mind
Not sure how but you're missing the point, which is the apparent interdependence of nama-rupa. The idea of unicorns, if there are not such actual creatures, seems to have been derived from physical horses and horns. The mind merely combines two known forms. Do you think the notion of unicorns could ...

Re: A Physicalist Theory of Mind
Where would one get an idea of what it [a unicorn] looked like? Visual art or a description. A concept is nāma, not rüpa, it is just a matter of simple definition. Rather, it's a matter of the dependence of mind and matter. You wrote: ... that [a unicorn] is nāma because it is conceptual, vikalpa. ...

Re: Faith
Faith as used in Buddhism is not the blind belief of other religions... Faith in any belief system exists on an individual basis, so how could it be possible to declare the character of any such system. It's like saying that the morality as practiced in Buddhism is of a certain character, when in r...

Shirky envisions an era of lower creative quality on average but greater innovation, an increase in transparency in all areas of society, and a dramatic rise in productivity that will transform our civilization. Oh dear, that sounds awful. I guess the good old days where people, like my mother for ...

I guess that it's probably not even possible to go backwards (to a "solid belief system"). Still don't know what solid is supposed to mean in this context, btw. Maybe someone can clarify that.

Re: New Defeatist and Schadenfreude genre in books and film
Ethics based in rationality may exclude a belief system, no matter how "solid," whatever solidity is supposed to mean in this context. And indeed, Buddhist ethics are not based in rationality. I disagree with both those propositions but giving reasons would take us even further :offtopic:...

Re: New Defeatist and Schadenfreude genre in books and film
What has changed is that currently ( and the world turns ) nihilism is seen as a badge of honour. Not as pathology. Nihilism seen as a badge of honor, really? I don't suppose you'd care to try backing that up in some way. Right, I didn't think so. And a pathology? Such extreme views, good ...
