Shinnyo-en?
http://www.shinnyoen.org/index.html Does anyone know anything about this organization? All I can figure out is that it is a lay organization which branched from Shingon and is sometimes referred to as a "cult" in some ways like how SGI is sometimes referred to as a cult. Are the cult alleg...

Differences between Chan and Zen? If any?
From what I understand, at the core, both schools are essentially the same. However, what are some distinct differences between Chan and Zen practice? If any? All I know is that both have different countries of origin and that (from what I've read) Chan is fairly syncretic and can contain esoteric r...

I've decided I want to look into Shingon. However...
...there are no temples or teachers near me. I believe it successfully mixes Buddhism with elements of Hinduism (primarily some of the deities), while at the same time developing it's own philosophy and practice. All the while retaining many Japanese rites and customs. The problem is, Shingon is con...

Re: Esoteric/Mystical, non-Vajrayana Buddhist schools?
I am also curious abt the OP as his own thread title and opening is on 'esoteric/mystical, non Vajrayana Buddhist Schools' yet wanting to be involved with a full fledged Vajrayana School like Shingon? Or perhaps the former is a second choice or 'back up' in case the latter is not available as the e...

Re: Esoteric/Mystical, non-Vajrayana Buddhist schools?
What do I mean by "Tibetan"? I DON''T mean the language or culture. Those, at least to me, are different entities in themselves. If one chooses a religion based on the culture alone, then they are choosing a religion for a wrong reason. A religion should stimulate one intellectually as wel...

Re: Esoteric/Mystical, non-Vajrayana Buddhist schools?
What are some esoteric, mystical or ritual-based, non-Vajrayana schools that can be found in Mahayana or, possibly, Theravada? I would love to be a Shingon practitioner, but there seem to be absolutely no centers in my region of the U.S. (Southeastern) and there is very little information online. I...

Shingon in the U.S.?
1.) What are some of the added beliefs alongside the 4NT, 8FP, 5P, etc.? I know of the otherworlds and deities, but not much else.
2.) What are some good (re)sources on Shingon?
3.) Are there any major centers in the U.S.? Specifically in the Southeastern region?

Anybody know what Chua Dieu Quang is?
I pass a building almost everyday with a sign that reads "Chua Dieu Quang". It is about the size of a small house, has multi-colored flags and there is another building in construction next to it. I think it's the new Buddhist temple in my town, but I'm not too sure. I did some research, b...

Re: Do Zen Buddhists fully accept rebirth as a truth?
I agree, you don't need to agree with everything to be able to practice. Remain agnostic and practice with a school. Sooner or later your views will either change (from meditative experience) or you'll realise these things just aren't that important to stress over I agree with this. I'm a Tibetan B...

What was your first memory of the Buddha?
I remember when I was younger, my mom used to have her friend's mom (who was Japanese) look after me when she went to work or school. She was a nice woman, lived in a good neighborhood and had plenty of stories to tell. I liked going over there...except for one thing. I was not a very tall child and...

Will science become redundant? Will the search for meaning and spirituality become redundant? Will being human beings become redundant? Will these endless Hollywood remakes become redundant?

Is time linear or cyclic?
Do you think that time is linear? That it has one starting point, will reach it's ending point and just simply cease to exist/continue?
Or do you think time goes in Cycles? Where each cycle has a starting and ending point, but restarts afterwards? Kind of like temporal rebirth.

Is Buddhism just as irrational as other beliefs?
Even though I'm a Tibetan Buddhist, Im still skeptical when it comes to it's more fantastical elements: such as the higher & lower realms as well as literal Karma. Nevertheless, I still, personally, believe in Rebirth; as I believe there is enough sufficient evidence to support such. However, fr...

An introduction to me.
Hello everyone. My name is DaftChris. I'm a college student studying psychology and still relatively new to Buddhism. I sometimes have my doubts when it comes to Buddhism, but it has helped me in many ways after I adopted it into my life. I was a Christian before and it never seemed to click with me...
