Witnessing Suffering

When I see someone, either human or animal suffer, I feel a great sense of suffering as well. As a Buddhist, is this a normal reaction to such events??

Personally I follow what has been already mentioned, but I also keep my dharma on the highest shelf on my bookshelf and only dharma books on that shelf as a sign of respect and I also don't want the dharma mixed with books that are not pure.

I was wondering if there were any specific mantras or prayers that are used first thing after you wake up and right before bedtime.
