"This very body is buddha"

So in the last year or so I would say my understanding has developed really well. I use to think dzogchen and mahamudra where kind of wastes of time but now after having delved in quite a bit deeper I've found a huge part of my practice open up due to the information they provided. I recently heard ...

Re: Orthodox Mahayana Sutras

Oh that would be really cool!

I think the sutras are just wonderful, have been enjoying them immensely reading through :)

I was wondering though, have we listed all the major ones, like the ones people regularly think of or are there some we have forgotten to list?

What is the Sutra that talks about what to trust

What is the sutra and or passage that talks about what to trust.

It is something like "Don't trust something because your told, don't trust ritual and history, don't trust tradition, don't trust sacred texts, don't trust logic, etc."

:)

Re: Orthodox Mahayana Sutras

Before the post goes all the way into another subject and before it totally dies out, I was wondering if anyone had some sutras names and English links they would like to add. I am most likely going to be doing some traveling and will be taking the list and links with me, so it would be deeply appre...

Re: Orthodox Mahayana Sutras

Thanks for the info guys. I knew about Dogen and others coming from that tradition and also a bit about the lineage and some of the beliefs (for instance a focus on the lotus sutra, the idea that all of the Buddhist teachings are coherent and can be put together in a perfect systematic structure, es...

Re: Orthodox Mahayana Sutras

Great post Jikan, To be honest I am really curious about Tendai and some of those other less known schools. Maybe we should chat sometime and you can enlighten me on them :) Also couldn't agree more about how you talked about the different traditions and sutras. I just had this idea that there where...

Re: Orthodox Mahayana Sutras

Wow that's really interesting. I didn't even know about this text. I wonder if it's more correct to view the sutra tradition as dependent on the school and or lineage of Mahayana Buddhism? Maybe some of our ordained members like Jikan, Malcolm, Indra, can chime in and say if that is correct or not? ...

Re: Orthodox Mahayana Sutras

Haha I can't get over your name "Lotus_Bitch" Ty for the post :) Sherab Dorje you think the "orthodox" sutras would be that high? I am sure there are that many sutras ,tantras, etc. lieing around but don't we have some kind of "collection" much like how the pali canon a...

Orthodox Mahayana Sutras

So a while back I asked for resources regarding English translations of Sutras and I got an incredible reply: I was wondering if there are other orthodox sutras which almost all schools agree upon. I thought it would be a cool sticky to have a list of every cross school recognized sutra :) Cheers! S...

Re: Vinaya schools & Precept Schools

Thanks Jikan, I can imagine that was quite an incredible experience! plwk I am familiar with bhikkuni ordination and also the vinaya used in east asia I was just wondering if anyone knew exactly which groups in china used the vinaya or had their own ordination process like the Japanese lineages. If ...

Re: Vinaya schools & Precept Schools

Also it seems Jodo Shinshu must take different rules as I believe I have seen some of their ministers married, etc. Since the Meiji Restoration it's been "legal" for all clergy in Japan to marry. Jodo Shinshu never really had much of an ordination process of taking on precepts, whether bo...

Re: Vinaya schools & Precept Schools

Thanks Malcolm I know you are really knowledgeable about dzogchen and probably the other traditions within vajrayana. Do these vehicles/traditions ordain under the vinaya of their regions or do they have precepts or vows or? *You mentioned two systems of commitments* *I am guessing the two sets of ...

Vinaya schools & Precept Schools

Hey everyone, So when it comes to Mahayana I have to be honest I only really know anything about Chan and Zen and maybe now with a whole lot of posts some things about the tantric schools. From what I have been able to gather the Tibetan monks ordain under and follow a version of the vinaya. Chinese...
