Re: Where do thoughts come from?
As to 'who or what is aware' that is in some ways a question without an answer, which is what makes it so interesting. The reason it is a question without an answer is because its primary assumption is backwards. As a result, no satisfactory answer is possible. But turn the primary assumption aroun...

Re: Question about "location of mind"
Nothing posted here has refuted my initial claim that mind cannot be known or located because it simply is never an object of cognition. It is always 'that which knows' and is never amongst the objects of perception. Thought cannot go outside of itself and look at itself. If it tries, it is still t...

Re: Question about "location of mind"
For Dzogchen subjective experience only appears out of ignorance, so it does appear, but that doesn't mean it's not an adulteration or a mere byproduct of imputation (it is). Again, not everyone here will be familiar with this "Buddhist minimal-awareness" view (Gelug prasangika-madhyamika...

"Unlocalized nirvana"... as opposed to "localized nirvana"?

Re: Question about "location of mind"
So you think the egg is aware that the sperms are swimming to it? And the sperms are aware that they are headed for the egg? The sperm and egg do not possess awareness. If the sperm possessed awareness, then also, every cell in the brain would possess awareness. It's the other way around. Awareness...

Re: Question about "location of mind"
It's what I said before, the brain provides the physical conditions for the experience. In fact, you can even map out where in the brain certain activities take place. But that's all it does. The experience provides the experiencer. Thought in itself is not actually thought, until it is recognized....

Re: Mūlamadhyamaka Kārikā translation
Looks good, so far. One thing to add: When looking at it, the beginning of the book is at the bottom of the page. This is anti-intuitive, and makes reading it a little more task-y.

Re: Nagarjuna's Mūlamadhyamakakārikā: Questions and Comments
Which is Buddhism closer to? Neither of that. Buddhism is not about giving clever answers to difficult ontological-epistemological questions. Madhyamaka is about understanding that suffering comes from the reification of concepts, from the ignorance of imagining things to have self-nature. To see t...

Re: Stopping thoughts?
I often encounter the advice that while practising shamatha one shouldn't try to stop the flow of thoughts, but should just sort of register them impassively. I found it basically impossible to do. Thought arises from consciousness. To be conscious without thought does not mean that the thoughts ar...

Re: Where do thoughts come from?
Where thoughts come from, and where they go... They are like waves on the open sea. They come and they go. Maybe you want to grab some water from that ocean; Put it into a bottle? Put it on the boat and save it for later? Maybe it is best to let the waves be waves. Just watch them being waves. Who w...

A lot of the "secrecy" has to do with 2 things: 1. dilution 2. control Some, "pure lineages" are more concerned with dilution. The "unpure" ones are concerned with control. These are big claims. Do you have any evidence in support of them? I mean material evidence, spe...
