Re: How do we know what our individual dharma is in the modern age?

"It is better to do one’s own dharma, even though imperfectly, than to do another’s dharma, even though perfectly. By doing one’s innate duties, a person does not incur sin." At a minimum our own dharma, at least wrt Buddhist teaching, means to cultivate love and kindness to all beings an...

Re: Counting breaths while meditation

Alan Wallace teaches many different variations of counting breaths. They are featured prominently his book the Attention Revolution, and his other books and recorded teachings of course. If I recall correctly, in a teaching I was listening to in the last year, Alan says that one could take the meth...

A very interesting way to stay in the now.
Amazingly I forgot to add climbing. Fantastic.

How often do you climb? What kind of rock climbing (like up and down 10-20 feet or scaling a cliff face)?

Thanks!

Re: Favourite Sports

The activity I have probably given the most time to over the course of my life is skateboarding. Next would be ice hockey. Next snowboarding. If I had grown up near the ocean, I probably would have surfed. These days, I probably ride my bicycle more than anything else. If you can see the theme... I...

Re: Favourite Sports

I ticked "other", as I so often do. I play an Olympic sport (at far below Olympic level, of course) which holds regular national and state level competitions (which I could maybe qualify for if I worked really hard, but I won't) and gets almost exactly zero coverage on mass media...

Poll: Summer or Winter Olympics?

Which do you prefer: Summer Olympics or Winter Olympics (or both equally or both but more one one side)?

I like both but more Summer Olympics.

Re: How to be consistent? How to just do it??

I know Zen Buddhism has the power to be life changing. The words in Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind (great book) hit me at my core. I know this path can open the door to acceptance in my day to day life. However my main issue is lack of discipline. I love reading “about” Zen Buddhism, but making the time...

Re: Is Nyingma much more spread than Sarma (in Europe)?

I would like to point out that HHDL and HH Kyabgon Sakya Gongma Trichen Rinpoche have both given the Kalachakra empowerment and initial teachings several times in Europe (for clarification HHDL more than once and HH 41st Sakya Trizen at least once). Other lamas, including at least one Nyingma lama I...

Well, what language do you find confusing. I'm asking because most of the Vajrayana/Mahayana language isn't confusing (although some definitely is). What specifically are you referring to?

Scott - this is Queequeg Since the official recognition of Buddhism in the 6th c. until the post WWII Constitution, Buddhism had a legal status as part of the state. Much of the history of Japanese Buddhism has been about recognition of various lineages by the state and the tension between state and...

Re: Do you get rid of suffering for good with Dzogchen ?

This is not really a Dzogchen question per se. I have a question. In the Dzogchen model, at what point or stage does suffering totally disappears ... When one attains Buddhahood However you radically restrict the scope of suffering: ... or greatly reduce with no possibility of regression even if one...

Re: Enlightenment

By gathering the collections of merit and wisdom (punya sambhara and jñana sambhara) for innumerable lifetimes and for several or many kalpas (world cycles). This is how you attain enlightenment - however you also purify the mind and purify karma as Shakyamuni Buddha did over three kalpas. So a bri...
