Re: How do you categorize/make sense of Tibetan Buddhist practices?

Vajrayana is essentially like a "pharmacy". Everyone has different primary "ailments" if you will. For example, some people may have tons of anger, whereas others may have much less anger but have lots of clinging. Everybody's a bit different. And so Vajrayana offers many differe...

Re: Opinions on dream yoga course?

Andrew Holocek is quite knowledgable about dream yoga. Dream yoga itself is not all that complicated of a practice. It's fairly straightforward, and is essentially a practice of lucid dreaming, and stuff you do while you're awake to encourage lucid dreaming, as well as things to do in your dreams as...

Re: Is Zen Mindfulness?

I can only answer your question from a Buddhist perspective. Buddhism does not consider all forms of mindfulness to be "Right Mindfulness" The Buddha specifically distinguished between wrong forms of mindfulness, and Right Mindfulness. We don't consider any and all forms of "mindfulne...

Re: Is Zen Mindfulness?

Yes, they do. As I mentioned previously, Raytheon, which is a weapons manufacturer, has a mindfulness program, and snipers in the military also have been known to use mindfulness. And this applies to any other form of wrong livelihood or wrong conduct. Whether mindfulness is Right Mindfulness or wro...

Re: Is Zen Mindfulness?

Well Buddhist practice, is training with the intention to teach oneself to refrain from those things. That's why it's called a practice. It's not "you must do this perfectly all the time, or you're not doing Buddhist training". But there is a big difference, between training to "teach...

Re: Master Hsuan Hua on garlic, onions, etc.

I would personally say that I disagree with Master Hsuan on that. He does not speak for Guardian beings or Devas or other such beings. They are sentient beings in their own right, and can decide for themselves who they will or will not protect, and that is up to them. I've run across guardian beings...

Re: Path to Buddhahood in Chan/Zen

I think it's important to point out, that people sometimes erroneously refer to the Buddha Nature, as "Buddha"( one word) and then mix up the Buddha Nature, with Buddhist concept of Buddhahood . Buddhahood is a very specific thing. And it refers to someone who has cleaned up all their past...

Re: The 10th Grave Precept

The reason for this Precept, is because the Dharma is the path to the Cessation of Suffering. Defaming the Three Treasures, is essentially defaming the best medicine that people have to cure them of their ignorance and suffering. To use an analogy, lets say someone had malaria, and lets say that one...

Re: The 10th Grave Precept

It would probably be helpful to post the original source of the Precepts. The Ten Great Precepts, and 48 Less Grave Precepts come from the Sutra of Brahma's Net. For the Tenth Precept, it says: TENTH PRECEPT: On speaking ill of the Three Treasures. "Disciples of the Buddha, should you speak ill...

Re: Is Zen Mindfulness?

I think one thing that's important to remember on this post, is that "Zen" is often, erroneously used interchangeably with "Zen Buddhism" and "Zazen Meditation" And it's important to use those terms separately because we are talking about two different things. Zen Buddh...

Re: Does Zen result in Buddhahood as described in sutras?

That was kind of the Buddha's big innovation. There were lots of mystics in His time that had had kensho's and lots of other spiritual experiences, even some higher ones. But nobody to His knowledge or to the knowledge of the people in His time, had ever gotten any higher than that. What the Buddha ...

Re: Does Zen result in Buddhahood as described in sutras?

So the wisdom espoused by the Buddha to extinguish suffering is not unique to Buddhism, and also not necessary to study, since children and Christians can experience it? If the kensho is merely another type of mystical experience and not the extinction of suffering, why pursue it? The wisdom of the...

Re: Does Zen result in Buddhahood as described in sutras?

Yes, they can. Children can have kenshos. Christians can have kenshos. Then what is the use of Buddhadharma? A) It makes spiritual training and progress a hell of a lot faster. (Like vastly faster). B) The purpose of Buddhist training is not simply to have a kensho. Most of the real Buddhist traini...

Re: Does Zen result in Buddhahood as described in sutras?

That is, how can one tell if it is a kensho if one has no idea what a kensho is? When you have a kensho, you will know. It completely changes you and you know, forever afterward, that you HAVE changed. And other people who've experienced kensho (senior monks and Zen Masters) can confirm that kensho...

We'll see. I'll be in and out. You know how it goes. If your intuition says "do this" you'll do it tomorrow, even if yesterday you got the sense that it wasn't good. Things change! We must always be willing to embrace the new change! :D

Well, I think I remembered why I stepped out of here in the first place. Generally speaking, I think this is one of the best Buddhist boards on the internet. And I'd recommend people check it out. There's just not much here for me anymore. I'm just at a point in my training where I'm not really in t...

Re: Does Zen result in Buddhahood as described in sutras?

Well it wouldn't work. The only way to understand a kensho is by having one. It's not something you can understand intellectually. People who've had one, can talk about it with other people who've had one, and they can have a mutually understood conversation. But if someone hasn't, that person will ...

Re: Does Zen result in Buddhahood as described in sutras?

I think you guys are being a little too in your heads about this. This is something that has to be directly experienced. Speaking as someone who's had more than one kensho, I can tell you that I am not a Buddha. I still have a great deal of training left to go before that happens. I do have Buddha N...

Re: Does Zen result in Buddhahood as described in sutras?

I mean I think what you're not understanding, Astus, is that there's more than one kind of kensho. The first initial kensho, is just the first one. The first seeing of your Buddha Nature. But that's not Full Buddhahood. In that brief beautiful moment it is, but that moment ends. You "come back ...
